Pop-up content * HMB can be caused by several underlying medical conditions; in clinical practice some treatments are
used despite not being specifically approved for HMB. This algorithm focuses on generally approved
treatment methods. Always refer to your local label.1

† Proposed algorithm for medical treatment of HMB in primary care. Adapted from Bitzer J et al. 2015.
These therapies are mainly suggested for women with HMB due to endometrial dysfunction (AUB-E) or
coagulopathies (AUB-C). a) Consider possible contraindication to estrogen use; b) Tranexamic acid may be
the first choice for women who do not want hormones (not a contraceptive); c) Consider if dysmenorrhea
is present (not a contraceptive); d) Only the E2V/DNG formulation had sufficient data to obtain EU and US
approval for this indication; e) Not considered a contraceptive and may be limited by tolerability. 1

AUB-C – abnormal uterine bleeding, coagulopathy; AUB-E – abnormal uterine bleeding related to
endometrial dysfunction; E2V/DNG – estradiol valerate/dienogest; HMB – heavy menstrual bleeding
