Notes: No. 1
Key Terms/ Points Details

1. Religion and Conflicts Religion does not create conflicts among people. It
teaches us to love our self, God and to love others.
Love is the core of Christian teachings.
Islam teaches us to make peace and not violence.
In order to make peace with others, we should make
peace with ourselves first because sometimes peace is
better than being right (Buddha).
Religion is not the problem. The attitude of the people
and our narrow understanding and knowledge of our
religious teachings and beliefs is.
Fundamentalism, extremism, and exclusivism rather
than inclusivism are examples of those attitudes.

2. Religion and Science Religion and science come hand-in-hand. They are
both a field that pursue knowledge about the universe,
however they are using different methodologies.
 Science acknowledges reasons, empiricism, and
evidence.
 Religion include revelation, faith and
sacredness.
Science do not contradict each other because both are
seeking the truth at their best in different perspective.
The problem is the interpretation and worldview of the
people itself. Their attitudes of being fundamentalism,
positivism, and materialism.

3. Religion and Freedom Religion does not suppress our freedom. It actually
frees us from slavery called sin.
Our faith will keep us from our sin.
Our misconceptions/misinterpretations and attitudes
like licentiousness, economic progress as sole measure
of progress, and moral relativism is the problem.

4. Religion and Changes Religion is not against change.

Religion encourage people to not be ruled by wealth
but rather help those who are hungry and poor. It
encourages people to help make change in the lives of
the needy.
The problem is moral subjectivism and moral
relativism.
Summary/ Reflections/ Insights:

Religion should not be blame in any human conflicts that are happening in the world right now. It
does not create hatred nor conflict with science, and it does not suppress our freedom or disagree
with change. Our faith teaches us to love and make peace with others. It basically gives meaning
and purpose to our lives and encourages us to live a healthy and happy life not just for ourselves
but for others as well.

Religion was never the problem. The real problem is, us, humans. The way we perceive things, our
attitudes, the way we think, and most of all our lack of knowledge and understanding about our
religion and its teachings. We should stop comparing religions. They may have different ways of
teaching but it will all comes down to the same idea, and that is LOVE. If we just open our hearts
and minds to understand, accept, and respect others beliefs without any prejudice, there will be no
conflicts, warfare, and hatred.

Being part of a religion is one thing, but knowing and understanding its teachings deeper will truly
make a difference. So, stop the violence and religious wars. Start spreading love and making peace
with others. Let us be the change that our religion has been hoping and praying for. 
