RESPECTING TRUTH

-IS BEING HONEST THE FULL MEANING OF THE Christian virtue to uphold the truth?

WHAT IS TRUTH

-We Filipinos, have affinity for the truth

-we recognize the value of truth in our personal experience.

LEVELS OF TRUTH

-First, we uphold the truth when our thoughts correspond to the reality we experience an we are not in
error. (CFC 1218)

--truth in our thoughts

--what is real from the outside and what we think

--helps us grow in knowledge and wisdom

--we can be ignorant if we deny our thoughts

-Second, we uphold truth in our words when we express truthfully what we think and do not lie

--truth in words

--truth in what you think and what you say

--value of honesty

--truth is really relative

--speak and write truthfully

-Lastly, we values truth in our actions when what we do corresponds to our thoughts and words, when
“we are not hypocrites who say one thing and do another.”

--truth in what we do

-- what we say contradicts to what we do

-- we have a moral obligation to live truth

WHY DO WE PURSUIT TRUTH

-AS CATHOLICS we acknowledge that God himself is the source of truth. He is the source of all knwoledg
and wisdom, of truthfulness and honesty, of fortitude and moral integrity

--Matthew 5:33-34- do not promise anything if you cannot do it, do not take an oath

-8th commandment

“we must love them both, those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject, for both
have labored in the search for truth, and both have helped us in finding it.”- St. Thomas Aquinas
“YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR” (Ex. 20:16;DT. 5:20)

-The eight commandment upholds the value of truth not only by prohibiting

JN. 8:32- “The truth will set you free”

JN 14:6 “I AM THE TRUTH

“Whoevery says, ‘I know him’, but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in
him… This is the way we may know that we are I union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought
to live (just) as he lived – 1Jn 2:4-6
