dacques-Francois GALLAY 12 ETUDES 12 STUDIES opus 57 pour cor {for horn COLLECTION Michel GARCIN-MARROU Gérard Billaudot Editeur ¢ Jacques-Frangois GALLAY (Perpignan 1795 - Paris 1864) Twelve Studies for second Horn vdedicated to Monsieur le Comte de FARROBO, Peer of the Kingdom of Portugal opus 57 JE GALLAY’s compositions for horn totalize over sixty opus numbers. His Twelve études pour second cor, opus 57, were first published in 1847, a mere two years after his Method. This edition is 4 faithful reproduction of the original text. Surprisingly, these Etudes are J.-F. GALLAY's sole compositions for second horn (or bass horn - cor basse ~ according to L-F. DAUPRAT's own terminology). Although they never use an extreme low register, they are nevertheless very interesting and sive horn players an opportunity to practice without suffering the pressure inherent to the high register. They are quite useful Jor the study of sound quality, breathing and phrasing from the low up to the high medium register. For better reading and performing - on modern instruments as well as on natural horns - a few corrections have been made ‘and some information added (printed in light grey). Moreover, in order to enable performance that is as close possible to the style that J.-F. GALLAY himself wished, and in articular for the natural horn, certain rules are quoted hereafier, together with the enharmonic scale : - the piqué is indicated by a dot. The tongue should articulate the note without harshness. On a minim or a semibreve, the sign reduces the length by one quarter. the détaché (staccato) is indicated by a vertical accent. The notes should be played very lightly. On a minim or & semibreve, the sign reduces the length by one half. =the coulé jeté is only used on ascending notes. The first note should be slurred onto the following note, which is immediately abandoned. - the 0 above a note indicates that the bell should be open, ‘The Enharmonic Scale is given here with indications for the hand movements in the bell for every note of the high register. ‘The fractions I/4 1/2 and 3/4 indicate thatthe bell should be closed by a quarter, a half or three-quarters. ‘The sign (1) indicates an artificial note that can only be obtained by completely stopping the bell. ‘The zero (0) indicates a note that is too flat and whose correct intonation is obtained with a more open bell.
