QUESTIONS
1. Fill in the blanks: [5 × 1 = 5]
(a) The molecules of a liquid can move about _____ within the boundary of the
vessel in which it is kept.
(b) 13.6 gcm–3 = _____ kgm–3
(c) 1 H.P = _____ W
(d) A man while carrying a luggage on a plane road does work against the force
of _____.
(e) The power spent by a body depends on the _____ for which it does work.

2. Answer the following questions: [5 × 2 = 10]

(a) Give two differences between evaporation and boiling.
(b) Why are liquids such as spirit stored in tightly closed bottles?
(c) The density of air is 1.225g litre–1. Express it in gcm–3 and kgm–3.
(e) In hot summer days water remains cool in earthen pots. Explain why.
(f) What do you understand by conservation of mechanical energy? State the
condition under which it holds true.

3. Answer the following questions: [5 × 3 = 15]

(a) The mass of an empty density bottle is 30g. It is 75g when completely filled
with water and 65g when completely filled with a liquid. Find:
(i) the volume of the density bottle.
(ii) the density of the liquid.
(iii) the relative density of the liquid.
(b) Find the maximum pressure exerted by a brick having dimensions
20 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm and weighing 2 kgf.
(c) A vehicle of mass 500 kg increases its speed from 36 kmh–1 to 72 kmh–1.
Calculate the increase in its kinetic energy.
(d) A ball of mass 2 kg is thrown vertically up with a speed of 10 ms–1. Find the
kinetic energy of the ball at the time of throwing. Also find the potential
energy of the ball at the highest point.
(e) Calculate the power of an electric motor that can lift 800 kg of water to store
in a tank at a height of 1500 cm in 20s. (g = 10 ms–2).
