Pronouncingjapanese
Pronouncing Japanese
complicated, pronouncingjapanese is easy once
you know the few basic rules. This book has been
designed so that as you read the pronunciation of
the phrases, you can follow the Japanese. This will
help you to recognize the different sounds and give
you a feeling for the rhythm of the language. A few
rules for you to note are below.
7
Japanese vowels
sounds like
a a’ as in bath
Pronouncing Japanese
i’ as in police
u u’ as in put
e e’ as in let
o o’ as in got
Longvowel sounds
15 Basic consonants
k, s, t, n, h, m , y, r, w , g, z, d, b, p, n /m
8
Since Japanese lacks the consonants I and v, foreign
loanwords with these letters are pronounced with r
and b, respectively. Thus, English words ‘love’ and
‘rub’ both become indistinguishable as ra-bu in
Pronouncing Japanese
Japanese.
Pronunciation Meaning
ki, shi, chi, ni ,hi, mi, ri, gi, ji, bi and pi sounds can
be combined with ya, yu or yo to create combined
consonants. For example, ki + ya become kya, ki +
yu become kyu and ki + yo become kyo. Examples
9
of this can be found in the words Tookyoo and
Kyooto, where it is pronounced as two sounds,
but said very quickly with the same length of one
syllable.

Grammar

Introduction
G ra m m a r
rules in Japanese. It is designed to enable you to
form simple sentences. There are different levels
of politeness in Japanese but polite forms, suitable
for travellers to use without being rude, have been
used throughout this book, including the dictionary
section.
151
Sentence structure
Particles
wa topic marker
ga subject marker
ka question marker
o direct object marker
ni in-direct object marker, goal and position
marker
to means‘and’(connect words)
de indicates means
152
Word order
Grammar
verb) in their respective places and you move the
object together with the necessary particle, the
words can be in any order.
153
Negative sentences can be made by changing the
ending of the predicate such as verb or adjective
accordingly.
It is quiet Shizuka de su
It is not quiet Shizuka d e w a a rim a s e n
It was quiet Shizuka d e s h ita
It was not quiet Shizuka d e w a a rim a s e n d e s h ita
154
Expressing desire
Verb forms 1
Grammar
The verbs can be divided into two groups.
155
simply replace ‘masu’ with ‘te’ tabe-te, age-te,
mi-te and ki-te. However, for the second group, you
have to pay attention to which syllable comes
before ‘masu’.
tte
(buy)
ki.gi.ji ite kiki-masu kiite
(listen/ask)
mi, ni, bi, nde yomi-masu yonde
(read)
Making a request
156
If you want something to be done, use the verb
te-form then add kudasai at the end: for example,
‘please speak’, h a n a s h ite k u d a s a i; 'please buy’,
k a tte k u d a s a i; ‘please eat’, ta b e te k u d a s a i.
Asking permission
Grammar
Use the verb te-form and add m o ii d e su ka. Is It all
right to eat? T a b e te m o ii d e su ka. Is it all right to
take a photo? S h a s h in o to tte m o ii d e su ka.
(shashln: photo(s), o: object marker, totte: te-form
of verb torlmasu, take)
Asking possibility/ability
1S7
For verbs in the first group, you simply change
-masu to -raremasu, then add the question marker
ka at the end for the first group. So, if you would like
to say, Can we eat here?, It would be K o k o de ta b e -
ra re m a s u ka, and Can we watch TV here? would be
K o k o d e te re b i g a m i-ra re m a s u ka.
