• Anemia is derived from the Greek word anaimia,


meaning “without blood.”
• Anemia is a decrease in the oxygen-carrying capacity
of the blood (functional).
o It can arise if there is insufficient
hemoglobin or the hemoglobin has
impaired function.
• Anemia = reduction in the red blood cell or
hemoglobin content of blood (operational)
