In spoken Spanish, a consonant at the end of a word "links" to a vowel at the beginning of the following word.

When a word ends in a consonant and the following word begins with the same consonant or sound, the two are linked and pronounced as a single
consonant.

Son nuevos mis citas el lazo

When one word ends and the next begins with the same vowel, they vowels are pronounced like one long vowel.

lo otro de estudiante mi íntima amiga

When a word ends in one vowel and the next begins with a different vowel, the first vowel is linked to the second.

su arte la estudiante mi otro coche

* Notice the effect of the silent h.
