PART – B

Answer one question from each Module. (20×3= 60 Marks)

Module – I

11. A simple engine uses an ideal gas with r = 1.4 as the working fluid in a pistonn-
cylinder assembly. The gas is first heated at constant volume from 1 bar and 300 K
to 5 bar, then it is allowed to expand isothermally to a pressure of 1 bar. Finally the
gas is cooled at constant pressure until its temperature is reduced to 300 K. Calculate
the efficiency of the cycle.

12. a) Sketch and explain the P-V diagram for a pure substance and show the isotherms
and constant quality lines on it.

b) Air at 10 bar and 600 K enters a device operating under steady state conditions
at a rate of 2 kg/s. The air enters the device with a velocity of 2 m/s. The air
leaves the device at 2 bar and 400 K with a velocity of 20 m/s. If the device is
well insulated, determine the power output of the device.

Module – II

13. a) Derive the following relation for the entropy change of an ideal gas.

's CplnÉÊ v 2 ÙÚ C vln ÉÊ P2 ÙÚ .

Ë v1 Û Ë P1 Û

b) One mole of air at 1 bar and 47 °C is compressed in a piston-cylinder assembly

to 4 bar and 127°C by doing 5 KJ of work when the surrounding temperature is 27°C.

Determine : i) the entropy change of air

ii) the entropy change of the surroundings, and
iii) the entropy change of the universe.

14. A heat pump is used in a house for heating in winter and for cooling in summer. It is
desired to maintain the house at 25°C throughout the year. The energy losses as
heat from the roof and walls is estimated at 50 kW per degree temperature difference
between inside and out side. The outside temperature is 3°C in winter and 37°C in
summer. Determine the power required to operate the device in winter and in summer.

Module – III

15. Show that for a pure substance the entropy can be expressed as a function of two
T
independant variables T and V as Tds = CvdT + Edv .

16. a) State and explain the Dalton’s law of additive pressures.

b) An insulated rigid tank of volume 1 m3 is divided into two chambers by a

partition. One chamber of volume 0.7 m3 contains Helium at 20 bar and 400 K
while the other chamber contains Nitrogen at 10 bar and 500 K. The partition is
removed and the gases are allowed to mix.

Calculate : i) the equilibrium temperature and pressure

ii) the change in entropy of Helium and Nitrogen, and
iii) the total entropy change
for Nitrogen : C p = 29.178 kJ/mol k; C v = 20.864 kJ/mol k
for Helium : Cp = 20.286 kJ/mol k; Cv = 12.471 kJ/mol k.
