2. Face shield/Mask
3. Safety goggles
4. Laboratory gown
5. Gloves

◦ The laboratory coat provides protection for the arms and
body. It should be washed regularly and whenever they
become contaminated with chemicals.
◦ Long hair should always be tied back and then covered
with head cap. (Wearing of hair net is optional)

the outside has different color. Make sure the white side of
the mask is facing towards your face.
◦ Gloves may be required to protect the hands against one or
more of a range of different hazards, including chemical,
biological, heat, and cold.
◦ Shoes must be worn in the laboratory.
B. Laboratory Floor Plan
◦ Familiarize yourself with the location of
the safety shower, fire extinguisher,
and first aid kit. Report immediately
any accident to your professor.
◦ Place your personal things on the
designated area, away from the
chemicals and laboratory apparatus.
◦ Students are not allowed to enter the
laboratory stockroom without
permission.
C. Hygiene

◦ Hand washing is to
be done before and

the laboratory technician to the instructor.
◦ Handle chemicals, reagents, and stains carefully and
follow all warnings.
◦ Label all test tubes and other containers with contents.
◦ Always double-check the name of the reagent.
◦ Reagent bottles should remain stoppered, except when you are
actually pouring solutions out of them.
◦ Take only as much as you need and never return leftover
solutions to a reagent bottle. Do not carry the reagent bottle to
your table.
◦ Always use an aspirator to fill your pipettes. DO NOT
ASPIRATE CHEMICALS BY MOUTH.
◦ Do not pour reagents and chemicals down the sink. Discard
leftovers in the proper container.
◦ If glassware accidentally becomes broken, carefully clean it up
with a broom and dustpan. Dispose of the broken glass in
containers labeled FOR BROKEN GLASS ONLY.
◦ Unplug all electronic devices after using them.

First Aid
First Aid Kit
◦ A first aid kit containing essential medicines, creams,
bandages and sterilized cotton is issued to the instructor
before the class begins.
Guidelines for First Aid Providers
◦ Maintain calm and evacuate the area in case there is
impending danger
◦ Start remedial action to save time before expert medical
help can be provided Do not attempt to move around the
victim unless he / she is exposed to smoke, fire,
hazardous chemicals or vapors. Take proper care in
moving to a safe location
◦ Ensure that the victim is breathing. If breathing stops try
artificial mouth- to- mouth or mouth- to- nose
respiration.
Guidelines for First Aid Providers
◦ Do not try to remove deeply embedded metal or glass
shreds. Bandage the wounds to control bleeding till
medical help arrives.
◦ Intense bleeding can be stopped by pressing the wound
with your thumb
◦ In case the victim has fainted turn him/her on the side
with the face tilted towards the floor to prevent choking
by the tongue.
Specific First Aid Tips
BURNS
◦ Hold the affected skin under a stream of running water for at
least 10 – 15 min.
◦ Keep the wound open and do not apply any ointment till expert
medical help can be provided.
◦ In case of strong acid burns, after washing with water, rinse with
dilute ammonia (1 – 2%) or sodium bicarbonate solution.
◦ CAUTION!: Never apply acid or alkali to neutralize the corrosive
liquid on the skin. Due to heat of reaction matters can get even
more complicated.
Specific First Aid Tips
EYES
◦ If corrosive liquid gets splashed into the eyes, wash the eyes
thoroughly with fresh water using an eye fountain or eye
wash bottle.
POISON
◦ Dilute the stomach contents by making the casualty drink 1
– 2 glasses of water and try to induce vomiting before poison
specific expert medical help can be provided.
