What's the difference between a wish and New Year’s Resolution? Wishes are our
dreams, their fulfillment often doesn’t depend on us. New Year's Resolutions are
some promises that you make to yourself, and their fulfillment depends only on you.

Here you'll learn how to set and stick to New Year's resolutions >

💬When we make statements about our resolutions, we often use

phrasal verbs:

👉We can use the phrasal verb “take up”to say that we will start
a new activity as a hobby.
- Sweet! Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?
- Yes, I do. I plan to take up kickboxing starting next week.

👉Another phrasal verb,“cut out”has the same basic meaning as “give up.”For
example, “I am cutting out sugar for the month of January.”

Next, let’s talk about verb tenses and forms. You can use:

👉Indefinite infinitive (to be more polite, to eat less sweets)

👉Bare infinitive (be polite, eat less sweets)
👉To be going to do smth (I am going to be polite; I am going to eat less sweets)
BTW, it’s perfectly normal to start your statements with, “My New Year’s resolution
is…” or “My New Year’s resolutions are…”. An infinitive verb or a gerund must come
after these phrases.
▫My New Year’s resolution is to call my sister on video chat every week.
▫My New Year’s resolution is calling my sister on video chat every
week.
