RBI- DRG Studies
• The Reserve Bank of India today released on its website the DRG
Study titled, “Threshold Level of Inflation – Concept and Measurement”.
The study is co-authored by Professor Ravindra H. Dholakia, Dr. Jai
Chander, Smt. Ipsita Padhi and Shri Bhanu Pratap.

• The Reserve Bank of India also released the DRG Study* titled, “Risk
Premium Shocks and Business Cycle Outcomes in India”. The study is
co-authored by Dr. Shesadri Banerjee, Shri Jibin Jose, and Shri
Radheshyam Verma.This study investigates the dynamic effects of
financial shocks on the business cycle. Against the backdrop of high
non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks, a financial shock is conceived
to be a shock to the interest rate spread stemming from a change in
the default risk of borrowers. It is termed as the risk premium shock

Ministry of Home Affairs extends FCRA registration
• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has extended the validity of registration certificates issued
under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 which have expired or are expiring during
the period between 29.09.2020 and 30.09.2021. The validity for the above mentioned registration
certificates has now been extended up to 30.09.2021

• This has been done under the Section 50 of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010
until September 30, 2021 due to restrictions imposed in view of COVID-19.

• The MHA has also issued an order stating that NGOs have to open an ‘FCRA account’ at State
Bank of India, New Delhi Main Branch upto June 30, 2021.

• After June 30, NGOs shall not be eligible to receive foreign contributions in any account other than
the ‘FCRA account’ opened in SBI NDMB.

• FCRA was first enacted in 1976 and then amended in 2010

• It aims to prohibit the foreign contributions being used for activities which are detrimental to
national interest.

SEBI Imposed Rs 5.25 crore Fine on Cairn India

• The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs
5.25 crore on Cairn India for making a misleading announcement regarding the
buyback of shares on January 14, 2014.

• SEBI has also imposed fine of Rs 15 lakh each on P Elango (CEO and director of
Cairn), Aman Mehta (director of Cairn’s board), and Neerja Sharma (director risk
assurance and secretary of Cairn).

• Misleading over Buyback of shares: In January 2014, Cairn India and its directors
made the public announcement of buyback but not utilised the minimum amount of
50 percent of the buyback size (despite the conditions were favourable to the
company) and violated the various provisions SEBI’s Prevention of Fraudulent and
Unfair Trading Practices (PFUTP) rule and Buyback Regulations.

LIC Hiked its Stake in Union Bank to over 5%
• The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) acquired around a 2 percent stake in
the state- run Union Bank of India and hiked its stake hold in UBI to 5.06 percent.

• Earlier, the LIC held a 3.09 percent stake in UBI

Forbes’ World’s 10 Highest-paid Athletes 2021

• Forbes’ annual ranking of the World highest-paid athletes for 2021 was released. Mixed
Martial Arts(MMA) Fighter Conor McGregor from Ireland topped the list with a total earning
of 180 million USD(around 1313 crores). McGregor is followed by football players Lionel
Messi (2nd) with 130 million USD and Cristiano Ronaldo (3rd) with 120 million USD and
American footballer Dak Prescott (4th) with 107.5 million USD.

• Forbes’ on-the-field earnings figures include all prize money, salaries and bonuses earned
between May 1, 2020, and May 1, 2021

• Off-the-field earnings figures are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and
licensing income for the 12 months through May 1, plus cash returns from any businesses
operated by the athlete, based on conversations with industry insiders.

• This is the first time where the top four athletes have earned over 100 million USD each.

Uttarakhand Police Launched ‘Mission Hausla’

• The Uttarakhand police launched a drive “Mission Hausla” to help people COVID-
19 patients to get oxygen, beds and plasma. The police are also supporting the
people to get ration and help them with ambulance service, cremation of bodies as
a part of the mission.

• The police of Uttarakhand has also availed 2 toll free numbers 112 and
9411112701 for emergency contact.

Haryana to launch ‘Sanjeevani Pariyojana’
• Haryana launched an anti-Covid “Sanjeevani Pariyojana”. It will provide a
supervised and quick medical care at home for people, with mild to moderate
symptoms of covid-19, residing in rural areas

• “Sanjeevani Pariyojana” will be launched to extend medical care in rural areas


where awareness regarding the second wave of COVID-19 and related treatment
remains low.

ELDERLINE – Helpline for senior citizens
• In order to address the problems of elders in the context of the ongoing COVID
pandemic, the Ministry of Social Justice has started state wise call centres in major
states under the ELDERLINE project. The facility is already made operational in 5
major States of UP, MP, Rajasthan, TN and Karnataka.

• In Telangana, this facility has been working for more than a year.

• These call centres can be reached by toll free number 14567. All elders may be
advised to use this facility. The ELDERLINE is a facility operationalised with the
assistance of Tata Trusts and NSE foundation.

MyGov launches innovation challenge for
creating Indian Language Learning App
• MyGov in partnership with Department of Higher Education has launched an
Innovation Challenge for creating an Indian Language Learning App.

• MyGov has launched the Innovation Challenge to create an app that will enable
individuals to learn simple sentences of any Indian language and acquire working
knowledge of a language. The objective of this challenge is to create an app that
will promote regional language literacy, thereby creating greater cultural
understanding within the country. The key parameters that will be looked into will
include ease of use, simplicity, Graphical User Interface, gamification features, UI,
UX and superior content, that makes it easy and fun to learn an Indian language.

• Top 10 teams will be invited to make presentations and top 3 will be selected by a
jury. The top 3 will receive funding of INR 20, 10 and 5 lakhs to make the apps
better.

India & Oman renew MoUs on Military Cooperation & Maritime issues
• India and Oman renewed the Memoranda of Understanding on military cooperation.

• The signing ceremony of MoU on military cooperation was held at the Ministry of Defense, Muscat.
This document was signed by Secretary General of Ministry of Defense, Oman Dr Mohammed bin
Nasser Al Zaabi and Ambassador of India to Oman Shri Munu Mahawar.

• The MoU on cooperation on maritime issues was signed at the Maritime Security Centre by
Commander of Royal Navy of Oman, the Head of Maritime Security Committee, Rear Admiral Saif
bin Nasser Al Rahbi and Shri Munu Mahawar.

• The pacts were signed in 2018 during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Oman.

• Oman is the first Gulf nation to have formalized defence relations with India.

Draft norms for 4-Wheeler Tyres
• Union Ministry of road and transport has recently notified about the draft rules for
4-wheeler tyres to raise the fuel efficiency. Norms for new model tyres will come in
effect from October 1, 2021 while for the existing model, from October 1, 2022.
Norms have been prepared on the line of norms followed in Europe.

• As per the draft norms, tyres of cars, buses and trucks should meet requirement
like wet grip, rolling resistance and rolling sound emissions. New norms have
been proposed with the aim of ensuring quality and reliability of tyres.

VIPER Rover to Search Resources on Moon
• NASA has announced to send its first mobile robot to the Moon in 2023. Mobile robot will search ice
and other resources on and below the surface of moon. This mission is an example showing
“robotic science mission” and “human exploration” go hand in hand.

• Mobile robot is a part of Artemis programme. It will collect data from Volatiles Investigating Polar
Exploration Rover (VIPER) and help scientists in mapping the resources at South Pole of the lunar
which have the potential to be harvested for long-term human exploration. Data obtained from
VIPER can aid the scientists to determine precise locations and concentrations of ice on the lunar
surface.

• VIPER stands for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover. It is a lunar rover which NASA has
developed to explore south pole of the moon. It will be delivered to surface of Moon in November
2023. The rover will explore the lunar resources in permanently shadowed areas of south pole
region of Moon. It will help in mapping water ice distribution and concentration. This mission is
based on previous cancelled NASA rover concept called Resource Prospector.

Air India Cyber-Attack
• Air India has recently announced that, ten years’ worth of Air India
customer data such as credit cards, passports and phone numbers
were leaked in a cyber-attack on its data processor in February 2021.
Cyber-attack has affected about 45 lakh customers who got registered
between August 26, 2011 to February 3, 2021.

• Cyber-attack has also compromised names, date of birth, contact


information and ticket information of the customers. This was a ‘highly
sophisticated’ attack which targeted Geneva-based passenger system
operator called SITA. SITA served the Air India apart from Star Alliance
of airlines including Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa.

Sir David Attenborough Appointed as COP26 People’s Advocate

• Sir David Attenborough, world-renowned broadcaster and natural historian, has


been appointed as the People’s Advocate for the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate
Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)-2021, which will be held in Glasgow,
Scotland, United Kingdom (UK) in November 2021.UK and Italy will host COP-26.

• As a People’s Advocate, he will take action to tackle the issue of climate change.

• Indian Origin, Alok Sharma was the Britain’s President-Designate of COP26.

‘CCI Journal on Competition Law and Policy’

• Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs released the
‘CCI Journal on Competition Law and Policy’ at the virtual event organised to
commemorate the 12th founding day of the Competition Commission of
India(CCI). CCI was established under the Competition Act, 2002 on 20th May
2009.

• She also released the Competition Advocacy Booklets of CCI, translated into
Bengali, Marathi and Tamil.
