It is true that the gap between rich countries and poor ones is becoming increasingly wide. Therefore,
how to help indigent nations to develop is an urgent mission nowadays. However, the solution to this
problem is still debatable.
Some people believe that wealthy nations need to help poorer ones. Firstly, foreign assistance in the
form of technology transfer, low/no-interest loans, or education, for example, can accelerate the
development process of poor countries. This can be seen clearly in Vietnam. This country has had a fast
economic growth rate since the open door policy in 1986 when it started receiving support from many
developed nations, namely England, the United States, and Japan. Secondly, most of the problems
existing in underdeveloped countries such as diseases and pollution are global issues. Without aids from
wealthy ones, these can not be solved because they require great investment and research.
However, it is also argued that the governments of poor countries have to be accountable for their
development. Depending too much on rich countries may result in laziness and dependence, which are
harmful. Only when poor countries know how to stand on their own feet can they have a sustainable
development. Moreover, if the governments are aware of their responsibilities and try to act right for
the sake of their citizens, they will have suitable policies to bring their countries to success. Japanese
government is a typical example. The authority led this country to become of one the most powerful in
the world after the second World War despite many obstacles.
In conclusion, I think that a poor country needs not only support from the outside but also their inner
strengths to have long-lasting achievements to gain a better life for their citizens.
