CHAPTER 1- REVIEW

Relation and Function

Definition of terms
1. Relation - is a rule that relates values from a set of values (called DOMAIN) to the second set of
values(called as RANGE )
Example: A= {(2,3); (3,4);(4,5); (5,6)} Domain (x) = {2, 3 , 4, 5} Range(y)={3,4,5,6}
Rule: Set of all x’s that is related to y’s by y is x increase by 1.
2. Function - is a relation where each element in the domain(x) is related to only one value in the
range(y) by same rule. Another definition of function: A function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y)
such that NO ordered pairs have the same value of x(domain) but different y-values(range)
3. Types of Relations:
a. One-one Relation
b. Many-one Relation
c. One-many Relation
Con’t
4. Describe a Relation in:

a. Arrow diagram

b. Ordered Pairs

c. Table

d. Graph

e. Mathematuical Rule: y = ________

5. Vertical lines test - A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical line intersects the

graph. at most once

Exercise: Determine the: a. Set of domain and set of range

b. Rule: y = _________ c. Graph d. Write f if function and r if it is a

relation

1. A = { (1,2) (2,4) (3,6) (4,8) (5,10)}

2. B = {(1,3) (2,7) (3,11) (4,15)}
3. C= {(1,0) (0,-1) (2,3) (3,8) (5,24)}
4. D= {(0,0) (1,2) (2,6) (3,12) (4,20)}
5. E= {(0,-1) (1,3) (2,7) (3,13) (4,21)}
