DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

In this experiment, the objective is to show that the intensity of radiation on a surface is

inversely proportional to the square of the distance of the surface from the radiation source.

The material or apparatus used by the students was the radiation apparatus which consist

of a heat source and a radiometer sensor.

Before beginning the experiment, the students set up the radiation apparatus by plugging

the device into the power source and switched it on. Then, the students set the power control to a

constant setting and allowed approximately 15 minutes for the heater to reach a stable

temperature. While stabilizing, the students adjusted the radiometer sensor to the desired distance

(X), which is the distance of the sensor from the heat source along the horizontal track. The

students also placed the reflective disc on the radiometer aperture before moving it to a new

position. They also noted the distance of the radiometer sensor surface from the centerline of the

detector, which was 65mm. After 15 minutes, the students removed the reflective disc to start the

radiometer reading. Next, after stabilizing the radiometer for 2 minutes after being moved to a

new position, the students recorded their readings. They have recorded the radiometer reading

(R) and the desired distance (X) for several positions along the horizontal track. After which,

they plotted log10 X on the x-axis vs. log10 R on the y-axis. And lastly, the students determined

the equation and correlation coefficient of the graph.
