Best Novel Series

Off the top of my head.

I start my recommendations with C. S. Lewis’s “Narnia: chronicles “. Though primarily seen more as
for children I think it is a wonderful choice for all ages. As a child I happily read them, and as an adult
I had a very different understanding.

Straddling the line betwixt children’s books and young adult is Irish author Eoin Colfer’s “Artemis
Fowl” series. I seriously lack the skill to sell this series to you. It’s funny, about growing up, and about
how to rob fairies. Just. Read. It.

More young adult in nature is Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance Cycle”. Which is a magical realm with
some dragons. It started when Paolini was a teen and was finished later as an adult and so this series
will reflect that. So while reading keep that nugget of information in your peripheral.

My next recommendations are definitely adult intended though. They hold nothing back in
description and/or in theme and so read at your discretion having been so warned.

Gregory Maguire’s “The Wicked Years” is an adult take on the Wizard of Oz. So if your heart adores
the childlike hope and gaiety of the original best give this series a pass.

German author Markus Heitz has an amazing cast of characters in his “Dwarves” series. Being the
titular race it is nice to read up on a fantasy race rarely granted center stage. The culture is very well
thought through.

Pushing the boundaries in many ways is Stan Nicholls’s “Orcs” series. By holding onto an anti-hero
approach reading from the perspective of orcs isn’t just amazingly unique it is utterly believable.
Similarly to Martin’s “Game of Thrones” the themes are dark and harrowing. Definitely not as all ages
friendly as “Harry Potter” or “Lord of the Rings” (excepting, perhaps, “The Silmarillion”).

There are other fantasy series that others undoubtedly will recommend, but I won’t recommend what
I have not personally read.

However-

I will recommend anything written by Tamara Pierce, Angie Sage’s “Septimus Heap” series, and Brent
Weeks’s “Lightbringer” series. I was honored to meet Pierce in high school when she came to give a
lecture. She is one smart woman. I may not have gotten immersed into their works but I trust my
friends, family, and the countless times I’ve seen their books grace YouTuber’s bookshelves.

Then there are many amazing stand alone fantasy novels. These series should keep you fairly busy
should you give them a try. Happy reading!
