Timeline of AI in health starts in the year 1955 and the term coined by John McCarthy founded as an
academic discipline in 1956 in US. Between 1960 and 1970, scientists developed first problem-solving
program, or expert system, known as Dendral assisting to identifying bacteria and recommending
antibiotics. In 1980s-1990s, growth of microcomputer and new levels of network connectivity
developed. AI systems in healthcare were designed to accommodate the absence of perfect data
and build on the expertise of physicians. Between 2010 and 2019, genomic sequencing databases, AI in
electronic health record systems, Natural language processing and computer vision, Robot-assisted
surgery, etc were the interesting facts among researchers in AI. From 2019 onwards, discovery and
development of drugs, preclinical research, personalized health care and many more explored in the
field of AI. It’s no longer science fiction, AI is transforming healthcare in various dimensions which
includes training, keeping well, early detection, diagnosis, decision making, treatment, end of life care,
research, training etc.
