INTRODUCTION

Project Topic: Project Proposal On the Behaviour of Bean Pod Ash Blended Cement Concrete
in Sulphate Environment
Supervisor: Engr. Joseph O.P.

Background of the Study

Several works have been carried out on the replacement of cement with pozzolanic materials
in order to modify the engineering properties of concrete mixes. Pozzolanic materials are
“siliceous or siliceous and aluminous material which in themselves have little or no cementitous
properties but in finely divided form and in the presence of moisture they can react with calcium
hydroxide which is liberated during the hydration of portland cement at ordinary temperatures to
form compounds possessing cementitous properties. Various activities or conditions may occur
over time after the construction of a structure, these occurrences may affect the strength and
other properties of concrete used in the construction of these structures. Concrete is affected in
different ways depending on the nature of the environment where it is.

Beans (with scientific name Phaseolus vulgaris) is a leguminous plant which serves as a
source of protein in food. Bean Pod is the residue gotten from the harvesting of beans. The beans
pod is usually peeled off to remove the bean seeds and is then left as waste material. As an
agricultural waste material the bean pod serves as environmental pollution, therefore its use in
replacement of concrete can be considered to have economic advantage.

In this project the bean pod will be grinded and used in partial replacement of cement in
concrete and serve as a binder. The concrete would then be studied under the influence of
sulphate environment.

Aim and Objectives

The specific aim of this study is to determine the characteristic behavior of Bean Pod Ash (BPA)
blended cement concrete in sulphate environment. To reduce economic cost of production of
concrete by reducing cement consumption.
Objectives

 Partially replace cement in concrete using bean pod ash.

 Cure concrete cubes for 7, 14 and 28 days respectively.
 Carry out various tests to determine the effect of sulphate environment on the bean pod
ash blended cement concrete.

Statement of the Problem: Effect of Sulphate environment on Bean pod ash blended cement
concrete

Justification: The project will help to determine;

 If bean pod ash is a suitable material in the partial replacement of cement in concrete.
 How bean pod ash blended cement concrete would behave in sulphate environment.

Scope of the study:

The scope of study goes across the examination of the behavior of the bean pod ash blended
cement concrete within the environment of 2 sulphates.

Tests to be carried out will include; Compressive strength, tensile strength, fresh concrete test,
Specific Gravity test, Water Absorption Test.

The samples would be collected and worked on in Department of Civil Engineering Laboratory,
Faculty of Engineering, Adeleke University, Ede

No of Samples:

Sulphates to be used: MgSO4, Na2SO4

Methodology

The materials to be used for this research work are mainly cement, water, aggregate (granite and
sand), and Bean Pod Ash (BPA). These materials would be used for casting of
150mmx150mmx150mm concrete cubes.
The methodology involves laboratory tests which comprises the collection of the materials and
casting of concrete cubes. The Cubes will be cured for 14 and 28 days respectively.

Tests to be carried out will include; Compressive strength, tensile strength, fresh concrete test,
Specific Gravity test, Water Absorption Test.
The specimens would be tested and crushed to obtain their compressive strengths at age 14, and
28 days of curing in different media (Na2SO4, and MgSO4 at 0.5%, 1.5% and 2.5%
concentration).
