SYNTHETIC VARIETIES

Definition
A variety which is developed by inter-mating in all possible combinations a
number of inbred lines with good general combining ability and mixing their seeds
(seeds of F1s) in equal quantity is referred to as synthetic variety.It is relevant to
cross pollinated species. The possibility of commercial utilization of Synthetic
Varieties in Maize was first suggested by Hayes and Gather in 1919.
Steps involved in Synthetic Varieties
• Isolation of inbred lines
• Evaluation of inbred lines for GCA
• Intermating of good general combining inbreds in all possible combinations.
• Mixing the seed of all F1 crosses in equal quantity
Role in Crop Improvement
Synthetic Varieties have been often used in the improvement of cross pollinated
Vegetables.In cauliflower, Pusa Early Synthetic 78-1, Pant Gobi -3 and Pusa
Synthetic are synthetic varieties .In Onion, Arka Bheem and Arka Akshay are
triparental Synthetic Varieties.In Cabbage, Pusa Synthetic is synthesized from 7
inbred lines with GCA .
