Introduction to Reiki Master Level 3

Reiki 3 brings stronger power, higher responsibility and greater insight than
most of us have ever experienced before.

The Reiki 3 course includes training in both healing and teaching. The course
includes a detailed review of Reiki 1 and 2. This gives the student and teacher
an opportunity to exchange concepts and experiences that reveal the breadth of
the Reiki discourse. It is also important that you are truly well-versed in all of
the skills, techniques and subtleties of the first two levels before progressing to
level 3. Very soon, you will be a Reiki Master conducting courses on your own
and you will need to know the planning, preparation and procedures that go into
a Reiki course.

As Reiki Master, it is essential that you become skilled in meditation for the
benefits in concentration, mindfulness and wisdom that it develops. All Reiki
training courses, healings or attunements begin with a meditation session.

During the first morning of this Reiki Master course you and your teacher will
discuss the following topics:

 Meditation practice and techniques

 Experience and practice of Reiki
 Problems or difficulties faced in using Reiki
 Your personal motivation for becoming a Reiki Master
 Overcoming fears, barriers and resistance to life
 Developing ability to perceive divine order
 Needs assessment
 Progressing as a Reiki Master
 Teaching skills

Teacher’s Heart

Teaching is a challenge, responsibility

and a joy. Teaching Reiki is powerful,
inspiring and intense. By opening your
heart and sharing your experience with
others, you exponentially multiply the
scope of Reiki and truly make it
available for the benefit of all.

Energy

The concept of energy may be unfamiliar to some students. Awareness of

energy has existed for thousands of years in cultures around the world. A brief
overview of the history of energy may be an interesting way to begin your
course. As Newton observed, “you cannot create or destroy energy.”

In Japanese, it is call Ki, as in Rei-Ki

In Chinese, it is known as Chi or Qi

To Christians, it is known as Light

Russian researchers have named it Bio-plasmic Energy

In Hindu thought, it is known as Prana

In Thai, it is called Palung Tamachat or Palung Jukawan

To ancient Egyptians, it was known as Ka

Sufis call it Baraka

Jewish Cabbalists call it Jesod

The Sioux Indians knew it as Wakan

Ancient Greeks referred to it as Pneuma

In modern times, quantum physicists have shown that

everything, including every thought, is energy. The human
mind and consciousness have the power to control and direct
this energy. Quantum theory is consistent with the practices
that we use in Reiki such as distance healing or sending energy
back to the origin of issues. This makes sense when we realize
that all is one.

6
Explication of the Five Reiki Principles

The five principles of Reiki are introduced in level 1. While the principles
themselves are quite basic, it is important to approach them in a more advanced
manner as you progress in your Reiki training. This section defines the
principles at both basic and advanced levels for you to share with your students
and to incorporate into your own practice.

Today, I give thanks for my many blessings

Simple as this principle sounds, it does indeed require

practice. Saying grace before meals, bowing to
Buddha images and praying before bedtime are all
important expressions of gratitude. At a more
advanced level, write down all of the things in your
life for which you are grateful. Meditate on these and
see for yourself the amazing abundance with which
you have been provided. Finally, meditate on the
words and feelings of “thank you” and “gratitude.”

At the same time, honour your parents, teachers and

elders. This can be done through the Buddhist
practice of “sharing merit” which is the sending of
loving kindness and compassion to all beings at the
conclusion of each meditation session.

Today, I will not worry

Easier said then done. To arrest our anxiety requires strong mindfulness during
the process of worrying. Observe the movement of your thoughts carefully
during your meditation and mindfulness practice. Each time a worry arises,
observe it with great scrutiny, but do not chase it away or deny it. Just watch it
until it naturally fades away. This practice supports you to know your worries
well without falling prey to them.

Today, I will not be angry

This one is also quite easy, as long as everything is going well. Be mindful
anytime that you feel anger arising in your heart. Watch it like you would keep
your eyes on a mean dog; don’t turn your back on it and don’t threaten it, but be
very alert to its danger. Ultimately, catch your anger arising before it converts
into words or actions; arrest it before it becomes a full-blown thought.
Mindfulness through meditation will greatly assist you in this process.

7
Today, I will do my work honestly

How can you deepen your

commitment to this principle?
Observe yourself throughout the
day to be sure you are acting,
speaking and thinking honestly.
Continue the observation until
you discover any wayward
actions or thoughts that fall short
of honesty. That is, be honest
with yourself anytime you discover a sense of dishonesty. Then, work with
yourself and find ways to purify your thoughts before those thoughts transform
into dishonest words or actions.

Today, I will be kind to my neighbours and every living thing

This principle challenges us to open our hearts

further, to find a kind word and smile for those
around us. It supports us to consider our diets
and whether or not we are living a non-violent
life. Eating meat or animal products that are
derived from cruelty or death goes against our
spiritual practice of kindness and compassion.

Look carefully at your diet and see what needs to

be removed immediately and what needs to be
gradually reduced. It might be too shocking to become a vegan overnight, but it
remains incumbent upon a Reiki Master to take steps in that direction. One by
one, remove offending items from your diet. Begin by removing beef, then
pork, chicken, poultry and smaller animals. Further along, reduce or eliminate
animal products such as milk, eggs, use of leather, etc. until you are truly being
kind to all beings at the optimum level.

8
Guided Chakra Meditation

This meditation procedure is suitable for

teaching Reiki at any level. As you become
more familiar with the chakra system, you
can evolve this procedure in your own style.

Students sit in a circle in the lotus position.

Have them close their eyes and follow their
breath. The teacher guides them through
self-healing chakra by chakra. This imparts
knowledge of the chakra system while at
the same time allowing the students to
experience the energy at each chakra.

The following example is for the root chakra. Refer to the detailed charts in
your level 2 manual for information on all of the chakras. Speak softly, gently,
firmly, maintaining strong mindfulness throughout the session.

Your script, although spontaneous, imparts information in the following

manner:

 Place your hands on your root chakra

 (Remain silent between each sentence for the duration of 3 or 4 breaths)
 The root chakra is red; imagine red light healing your root
 (For level 2, have students apply the 3 symbols)
 The root chakra develops while still in the womb, up to one year of age
 The basic rights of this chakra are to be and to have
 (Maintain awareness of your breathing)
 The root relates to our sense of stability and sense of trust and grounding
 Ask Reiki to heal this chakra for you
 Physically, it deals with the bowels and large intestines
 Emotionally, it relates to issues of abandonment, neglect and security
 Symptoms of weakness include fear and anxiety

Each chakra requires about 5 minutes. Continue guiding the students through
each chakra, interjecting brief suggestions to help them maintain a meditative
state. The complete meditation takes 30 to 45 minutes.

9
Curriculum for Teaching Reiki 2

Studying the Reiki Master level includes a thorough review of Reiki 2. Be sure
you are familiar with all of the concepts and techniques in the Reiki 2 manual
and prepare yourself for teaching the material. Reiki 2 requires two days of
teaching, preferably on alternate days so the student has time to practice
techniques and skills in between classes. The following table shows the
curriculum used for a recent course in Bangkok. On the first day of a Reiki 2
course, the teacher introduces the following materials:

Review your student’s level 1 experience (1.5 hours)

 Morning meditation practice

11
Developing yourself as a Healer and Teacher

Hui Yin Position

The Hui Yin position increases your ability to hold

and direct energy. Take a deep breath, lock your
root chakra, hold your tongue to the palate on the
roof of your mouth, lock your throat chakra, and
bend slightly at the knees. It draws energy from the
universe through your crown, while drawing energy
up from earth. This position is used throughout the
Reiki attunement process.

By locking the two chakras, the energy within you is

intensified. There are two paths for the energy to be
released from this position. One, the energy can
flow out through your palm chakras during a healing
or the attunement process. Alternatively, you can
blow Reiki out your mouth into the student’s
chakras, which is an essential part of the attunement
process. This position needs to be practiced in order
to pass attunements powerfully and effectively.

Pranayama

The Indian name for energy or life force is Prana. The science of Yogic
breathing is known as Pranayama. These exercises will help you gain greater
control over your breath, deepen your breathing, and develop keener awareness
of your breathing process. These techniques are essential for purification of the
nadis, or energy channels of the body.

Calming breath: Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Breathe in
through the left nostril only, inhaling for a count of 5 seconds, exhaling for a
count of 10 seconds. Breathe deeply, first expanding the diaphragm, then the
ribs, then the chest. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Breathing in the left nostril is
cooling moon energy called Ida, which is used for calming, especially suitable
in the evenings before sleep.

Activating breath: Close the left nostril with the ring and pinkie fingers of your
right hand. Breath in through the right nostril only for 5 seconds, exhale for 10
seconds. Breathe deeply, first expanding the diaphragm, the ribs and finally the
chest. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Breathing in the right nostril activates sun energy
called Pingala, suitable in the mornings.

12
Developing yourself as a Healer and Teacher (continued)

Pranayama (continued)

Alternative nostril breathing: Close your right nostril with your right thumb,
place your index and middle fingers on your brow chakra. Breathe in through
the left nostril for a count of 6 seconds. Close your left nostril with the ring and
pinkie fingers. Exhale for a count of 12 seconds out your left nostril. Now,
repeat the process vice versa, breathing in through the left, then out through the
right. Repeat 15 to 20 times.

It is not the posture or prayer,

but the awareness and intent
that are essential to your development

Bandhas (chakra locks)

Jalandhara Bandha

A bandha refers to the locking of a chakra. To perform Jalandhara Bandha,

lower your chin to your chest while holding your breath. This prevents energy
from rising above your throat. This bandha is used when passing attunements,
so needs to be exercised in preparation for teaching Reiki.

Uddiyana Bandha

Begin by fully exhaling and emptying the lungs. Pull your abdomen up and in.
In addition to stimulating the liver and digestion system, this bandha raises vital
energy upwards through your chakras.

Moolah Bandha

Pull your rectal muscle up and in, thus locking your root chakra. This prevents
energy from flowing out through your legs into the earth. This bandha (also
referred to in the Hui Yin position) is essential for channelling energy during
the attunement process. It needs to be practiced and held for up to one minute
in preparation for passing Reiki attunements.

13
Developing yourself as a Healer and Teacher (continued)

Meditation

Meditation helps you awaken and transform your consciousness, moving you
away from a self-centred ego to be more aware of universal self. In Andean
cosmology, by becoming invisible, the Shaman truly masters healing. In the
Buddhist sense, this is Anatta, or non-self. By releasing attachment to ego, we
become one with the universe and energy flows unimpeded.

Meditation calms the mind and increases concentration skill. This prevents the
mind from jumping around. This is especially important when doing distance
healings or passing attunements where strong focus is required. Meditation
increases energy and vitality, giving the skill to overcome depression, anger,
fear and other mental barriers to perception of the divine order. It helps us
become aware of negative thought patterns and habits, and thus overcome them.
It helps us move from a doing mode into a being mode, bringing greater peace
and equanimity to our minds, and contentment with what we have, rather than
obsessing with what we want.

Practice

 Select the most suitable time for daily meditation; first thing in the
morning is optimum
 Sit cross-legged or in lotus position, moving as little as possible
 Begin by sitting 20 minutes per session, gradually up to one hour
 Observe the breath as it passes through the nostrils
 When the mind wanders, bring it back to observing the breath
 Repeat the above two steps thousands and thousands of times!

 Mentally scan your body from head to toe, from toe to head (body scan)
 Observe all sensations without attachment, without analysis
 Maintain attention on the breathing
 Be aware that you are nature, or an observer of nature (depersonalization)
rather than some being separate from nature
 Be aware of each thought that arises, without attachment, simply observe
 Maintain attention on the breathing

A Reiki Master needs to make a commitment to meditation on a daily basis, as

well as attending a 7 to 10 day retreat with a meditation master to practice
intensely.

14
Therapeutic Communication

Conversation with your patient is a powerful aspect of Reiki. While receiving

Reiki, patients tend are more relaxed and open to discussion. This is conducive
to helping them make important changes in their lives.

Each communication has a unique flavour; some patients talk the entire time
while others say little more than mmm. Initiate conversation before healing
begins to assess the direction in which the session may go. If your patient
becomes very still and taciturn during the healing, respect their silence and save
the discussion for later.

Here are a few sample questions that you might raise during healing sessions.
More importantly, listen to your own intuition, and you will know what topics
need to be addressed.

 What outcome would you like from this healing? Can you visualize that?

 What is the exact question that you would like to answer?

 What is the exact problem that you want to overcome?

 Are you willing to make changes to achieve that outcome?

For example, while healing the root chakra, you may see an image in your mind
of an older man. Knowing the chakra system, you might deduce that this image
relates to the patient’s early relationship with their father. Proceed to ask
general, non-invasive questions about their father to see how much is on their
minds. This is intuitive, therapeutic, energetic co-healing!

With true understanding, there

can no longer be anger, fear,
or impatience, for true
understanding sees right to the
root of every case. Thus, every
situation is a learning situation.
There are NO exceptions. The
lessons will continue to repeat
until you learn, and then, the
lessons will no longer be
necessary and you can move
forward in your development.

15
Knowledge and use of Level 3 Symbols

Until this point, most of your training for level 3 has been a review of the first
two levels and preparing you to teach those levels. This section introduces the
essential elements of healing and passing attunements with the symbols used in
Reiki 3. This section of your training includes the following topics:

 Chakra Meditation (self-healing)

 Dai Ko Mio (modern)
 Distance healing and manifesting with Reiki 3
 Dai Ko Mio (modern, anti-clockwise)
 Dai Ko Mio (traditional)
 Raku
 Discuss preparation for giving attunements
 Instructions for doing attunements (Levels 1, 2, 3)
 Practice giving attunements
 Practice attunement procedure (on students, plants, animals, etc.)

Humility underlies all spiritual progress

It is humility which you as a human need to

practice through all of your human trials.

Through humility, divinity is able to pass

through you unhampered. Thus, it is through
divinity that all obstacles are overcome.

Jophiel

16
Knowledge and use of Dai Ko Mio (Modern)

Dai Ko Mio (DKM) is a very powerful symbol used in healings and

attunements. It is used for healing the soul at the spiritual level. The spiritual
body is the blueprint for the physical body; healing at the spiritual level thus
achieves profound results that reverberate throughout the patient’s being.

The modern DKM consists of a double

clockwise spiral (goddess energy), which
condenses energy (Ki) at its core. The spirals
create energy vortexes that draw in other
energies.

The second part is a curved line above the

spiral going to the right. Finally, a lightening
bolt is drawn between the spiral and the
curved line. You will recognize the
lightening bolt as part of the Raku symbol,
explained later.

As with the symbols in Reiki 2, practice

drawing this symbol on paper, in the air and
visualize it mentally until it becomes familiar
and comfortable to use.

 Use the modern DKM in every healing at every chakra

 DKM can be called the “Great Bright Light”
 DKM heals from first cause, going to the origin or root of issues
 Send DKM from your heart to the heart of the patient during distance
healings
 DKM has the power to affect life changes
 It empowers and supports people to make brave decisions and take
courageous steps towards growth
 DKM begins the Reiki attunement process
 Trace DKM over your heart chakra during self-healing
 Use DKM to clear and charge crystals
 Experiment for yourself to see what other benefits DKM offers you

17
Distance Healing with Reiki 3

To focus your intent during distance healings, manifestations and meditations, it

is very powerful to write down your request. Draw a triangle with an open top
as shown in the diagram below. Write your request inside the triangle and then
draw CKR, SHK and HSZ symbols at the three points of the pyramid. Sign the
paper. Visualize the modern DKM hovering above the triangle. Fold the paper
and hold it between your hands. Meditate, send energy to the request, and
visualize the healing taking place as you intend it.

Use these sample sentences to guide you in writing your healing requests.

 Please heal (name) at the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional levels.
 Specifically, help reduce her stress, headaches and sore neck at the origin
of these problems.
 Let this energy flow from 1 to 3 p.m. during his exam on Friday to achieve
optimum results.
 Please provide Ann with the insight to change her lifestyle and diet to
bring a complete, life-long cure for this disease.
 Please help Maureen gain insight into the causes of her illness, and guide
her on the path for a strong, long-term recovery from all illness.
 Please repeat this healing process on Wednesday and Friday nights at 10.

18
Manifesting Life Change with Reiki 3

Use Reiki 3 to discover answers to your most perplexing questions and

solutions to your most challenging problems. Draw the open triangle as shown
on the previous page. Write the exact question that you would like to address.
Draw the symbols on the paper and hold it between your hands. Meditate on
your question. Here are a few life changing questions to guide you in your
growth as a Master Teacher.

 What do I really want to do?

 What do I really want from life?

 What is the most suitable method for my

personal development?

 Where or what is the ultimate source of

knowing truth?

 Where is my true value?

 Please increase the flow of Reiki to

deepen my spiritual awareness and to
deepen my meditation practice.

 Please send Reiki to support me to prioritize my life and show me how to

best develop myself for the benefit of all beings.

19
Modern Dai Ko Mio (Anti-clockwise)

This symbol can also be drawn anti-clockwise for a variety of different uses. It
is basically the same symbol, but it changes characteristics in the following
ways:

 When used in reverse (anti-clockwise

spirals), DKM pulls negative energy out
of chakra or auras
 Used anti-clockwise, inner energy (Ki)
expands to connect with Ki beyond the
body
 Anti-clockwise spirals create dispersion
and unwinding of energy
 Experiment to see how this symbol best
works for you

The force with which we express our opinions

is indicative of how desperate we are to
persuade ourselves of the truth.

20
Knowledge and use of Dai Ko Mio (Traditional)

The traditional DKM consists of a series of 17

lines, as shown in the diagram on the left. This
symbol can be used in all healings.

This is the symbol taught in traditional Reiki

courses. In modern times, many teachers have
switched to the modern symbol shown earlier.

Practice drawing this symbol until it becomes

familiar. Thereafter, choose for yourself
which DKM symbol feels best for you. You
may prefer one, or you can use both,
depending on your intuition.

 Use the traditional DKM in every healing

 DKM translates as “Great Bright Light”
 Apply it to every chakra
 The traditional DKM heals from first cause, going to the root of any issue
 The traditional DKM has the power to affect life changes
 Use it to support patients to make brave decisions and take courageous
steps towards growth
 Use the traditional DKM to clear and charge crystals
 Meditate on this symbol and ask for further guidance as to its use

21
Knowledge and use of Raku

The Raku symbol is used specifically during attunements. The version shown
here is a modern variation. The symbol consists of a clockwise spiral
resembling the modern DKM and a lightening bolt. The traditional Raku
consists only of the lightening bolt.

Raku is the master symbol used to complete attunements. The spiral is drawn
behind the student’s head, with the left and right diagonal lines drawn down the
arms of the student. The lightening bolt is drawn from the top of the spine
down to the ground, into the centre of the earth.

Only in rare cases would you use the Raku for healing purposes. There are no
guidelines for such cases except to use it wisely and cautiously only in
exceptional cases such as great danger or imminent death.

 Raku grounds energy in the Hara Centre (tan tien)

 Raku completes the connection between heaven and earth
 Lifts negative karma from the person receiving attunement
 Activates the “Hara Line”
 Raku completes the attunement process
 It separates the teachers and student’s auras after attunement

22
Passing Attunements

The Reiki attunement ceremony is a powerful and exciting sacred experience

for master and student alike. Not only does it make people into healers, it
produces life changing spiritual effects. Many steps need to be followed
carefully to complete the initiation process. The process described here is my
own method, synthesizing other techniques and evolving over the last 4 years.

Meditation

To begin, it is wise for both Reiki Master and student to sit quietly in
meditation. The student should be seated in a chair, feet flat on the floor, in
preparation for receiving the attunement. You might lead a whole body
relaxation or do yoga beforehand to open energy channels.

Purification

The training area should be physically clean and free from clutter. Remove any
metallic jewellery and watches. Purify the area using incense, keeping a candle
burning throughout the initiation process. Both teacher and student need to
wash hands and be purified with incense or a smudge stick. Use CKR and SHK
to protect and purify the area. If you like, students can participate in the
purification process.

Request guidance and protection

Close your eyes and hold your hands in a prayer

(gasso) position. Invoke the 5 Reiki symbols, CKR,
SHK, HSZ, DKM (both modern and traditional).
Request Reiki to guide you and support your
throughout the attunement process.

Gently approach the student and lift their hands into a

prayer position. While holding their hands between
yours, ask Reiki aloud to perform the initiation. You
request may be, “We ask Reiki to perform the Reiki
(level 1, 2, 3) attunement for … (student’s name). We
request Reiki to guide her with love, compassion,
wisdom and with protection for the benefit of friends,
family and all beings.” As you progress as a Reiki
Master, create your own sacred requests.

23
Student asks for support

It is very powerful to ask the student what kind of change they would like to
make in their life in order to become a purer, more powerful channel for Reiki.
Have the student request support for overcoming specific barriers in life. In the
case of Reiki 1 where there are traditionally four attunements, ask the student to
request support during each attunement.

 For the first attunement, ask for physical healing to

support them as a Reiki channel.
 For the second, the student asks for help
overcoming some specific emotional barrier.
 For the third, they ask for help in resolving some
mental issue.
 For the fourth attunement, they ask for specific
spiritual guidance or purification.

Passing the Attunement

The student holds their hands in a prayer position while

you gently walk anti-clockwise to the back. Centre and
ground yourself; confirm that you are fully prepared to
channel the attunement. Invoke your Reiki guides and
surround yourself with light. Place your hands gently on
the student’s crown chakra and hold for several
moments. When you feel the time is right, lift your
hands up and out in a gradually widening arc to open the
crown chakra. Observe the nature of the energy coming forth from their crown.

Blowing symbols into the Crown

Return your hands to the crown chakra. Hold the Hui Yin position as described
earlier. Visualize the modern DKM, mentally say its name 3 times, then see it
passing from your heart, out your palm chakras and into the student’s crown
chakra. Slightly open your hands and blow the symbol into the crown while
visualizing it going deep to the centre of their being.

Take another deep breath, hold the Hui Yin position, and visualize CKR, SHK,
HSZ and traditional DKM flowing into their crown, repeating the name of each
symbol 3 times. Open your hands and blow the 4 symbols into their crown.

Lift your arms up and out in a wide arc, greatly opening the crown chakra and
profoundly connecting with sacred Reiki universal energy.

24
Blowing symbols into the heart

Walk to the front of the student, continuing in an anti-clockwise direction. Take

their hands in yours and resume the Hui Yin position. Visualize and mentally
name the 5 symbols as you see them flowing into their hands. Then, spread
their arms apart and gently blow the five symbols into their heart chakra.

Tapping and blowing symbols into the palms

Bring the student’s hands to a comfortable level in front of you.

Open their palms like an open book, right hand on top.
Support their hands with your left hand, while resting your
right hand on top of their hands. Hold the Hui Yin position
throughout this process. Visualize and mentally name all 5
symbols (modern DKM, CKR, SHK, HSZ, and traditional
DKM) going into the palm 3 times. During this time, the
master taps the symbols into the palm chakra following these
instructions.

For Reiki 1, tap CKR into the palm 3 times.

For Reiki 2, tap CKR, SHK and HSZ into the palm 3 times.

For Reiki 3, tap the modern DKM and the traditional DKM
into the palm 3 times.

Finally, blow all of the symbols into their palm, visualizing each one as it passes
from your heart into their palm chakra. Cover their hand again to seal in the
symbols. Reverse the hands and repeat the above steps for the left hand.

Connecting the upper chakras

Hold and maintain the Hui Yin position throughout

this step. Return the student’s hands to a prayer
position and gently raise their arms over their heads.
Visualize and mentally name the 5 symbols going
into the “transpersonal chakra” located about 25
centimetres above their head.

Bring their hands to the crown. Visualize and

mentally name the 5 symbols going into the crown
chakra. Bring their hands to the throat. Visualize
and mentally name the 5 symbols going into the

25
throat chakra. Bring their hands back to the heart. Visualize and mentally name
the 5 symbols going into the heart chakra. Release their hands and step back.

Closing the aura

Walk slowly to the back of the student, sensing their

aura. Walk all the way around, using both hands to seal
the aura. Continue all the way around until you are
once again behind the student.

Employing Raku

Stand behind the student about 25 centimetres. Hold

your right hand behind their head while holding the Hui
Yin position. Draw the spirals of the Raku master
symbol behind their head, with the arms of the symbol
following the direction of their arms. Draw the
lightening bolt down the back and ground it to the
centre of the earth.

Completing and confirming the attunement

Place your hands back on the student’s crown chakra. Mentally thank Reiki for
guidance and ask Reiki to correct any errors you may have made or complete
any steps you may have missed. Gently lift your hands skyward, opening the
crown chakra to heaven.

Return to the front of the student and hold their hands in yours. Make a
blessing of this nature: You are now attuned to Reiki (Level 1, 2, 3). We thank
Reiki for providing the love and light, wisdom and compassion to use Reiki for
the benefit of all beings. Thank the student for making themselves available as
a channel of Reiki. Step away from the student and instruct them to do a self-
healing to allow the energy to flow.

Offer a glass of water and inquire how the student feels; share your experience.
Be sure to wash your hands well and sweep all energies away from your own
aura upon completion, and before attuning the next student.

Notes on passing attunements

Each attunement is a unique, sacred experience. Student and Master alike may
feel great joy, or a release of tears; some may even giggle. Some see colours,
feel an otherworldly presence, some are speechless. All have experienced a
very profound spiritual initiation.

The attunement for Reiki 1 is traditionally done 4 times. Modern teachers may
opt to pass the attunement only one time, asking Reiki to repeat the initiation
the other 3 times. This certainly saves time in cases when there are numerous
students to be attuned. If you have the time, I suggest giving the full 4
attunements until you are confident that you are channelling the necessary
power to complete the process in just one initiation.

The Reiki 2 and Reiki 3 attunements are traditionally done 2 times each. With
experience, you may opt to conduct these ceremonies just once, asking Reiki to
repeat it for you. Whenever possible, I do the complete series of attunements
as described in the traditional method.
Nevertheless, I employ the Hui Yin empowerment
position to optimize the energy that I am capable
of channelling.

Don’t knock yourself out. If you are teaching a

class of 5 or 10 students, it will probably be
necessary to limit the number of attunements that
you do for each student. Allow ample time
between students to refresh and purify yourself.
Certainly don’t get worn out, for it makes the next
teaching session very difficult on you. Be gentle
throughout, with the student as well as with
yourself.

Using a Pendulum

The human body absorbs subtle energy from the environment and passes this
information to the subconscious. The muscles respond at a very delicate level.
A pendulum reflects this muscular activity by swinging or circling in response
to the energies being experienced.

Using a pendulum during healings is very helpful for diagnosing issues and
confirming your intuition. To begin using your pendulum, sit very still in a
meditative state, allow the pendulum to hang freely from your fingertips, and
mentally intend it to begin tracing over these arrows.

With practice and patience, you will see that your

pendulum swings by itself, simply by focusing your
intention to make it move. Practice further by
intending it to swing in circles clockwise and anti-
clockwise.

Once your pendulum is moving freely, begin asking questions and making
requests to see what the pendulum will show you. Request your pendulum to
indicate the direction of “yes,” until a definite direction can be perceived.
Then, request the pendulum to demonstrate the direction of “no” until the
meaning of “no” is clearly indicated.

28
Request the pendulum to illustrate “no information possible,” “positive,”
“negative” and “neutral” until all indications are clear. Go back to the
beginning and check all responses again until you are confident that the
responses are accurate and consistent. Fill in this chart as you determine the
indications of your personal pendulum. In a few weeks, check it again to
confirm that your readings are accurate and stable.

Testing your Pendulum

Begin training and testing your pendulum by asking some basic questions such
as, “Is my shirt blue?” “Is today Thursday?” “What effect do scary movies
have on me?” “What is my feeling about classical music?” Ask a series of
“Yes-no” and “Positive-negative” questions until you get steadily accurate
readings. Properly phrased questions are essential to the accuracy of your
reading. Also confirm your readings by asking, “Is this a true answer?”
“Have my own feelings influenced this answer?”

29
Reading with your Pendulum

Relax in a non-thinking mode, with only positive motives. Once you know the
patterns and answers that you can get from using a pendulum, begin asking
more difficult questions that you don’t actually know what the response will be.
For example, pick up a piece of food, hold it to your solar plexus and ask, “Is
this food positive or negative for me?

Think of a place that you are considering

visiting and hold that image in your mind.
Ask the pendulum, “Is it a good idea for me
to go there today?” Is it a good idea for me
to go tomorrow? “Is Saturday the best day
for me to go?” By asking a series of yes-no
questions, you can receive complex answers.
Be sure to keep your answers simple, asked
in the positive, avoiding negative words such
as “can’t, won’t, don’t” etc.

Next, begin reading the energy of chakras.

Place your hand on one of your chakras and
request the pendulum to show you the quality
of energy in that chakra. Repeat this process
for all chakras, auras or organs as you aim to
determine the positive and negative energies
that you encounter during healings.

Test your pendulum with the Reiki symbols. Hold

the pendulum over a drawing of a symbol, and see
what it tells you about the energy of the symbol.
Similarly, just visualize the symbol, and see what
reading you receive.
