Introduction to Reiki Master Level 3
Reiki 3 brings stronger power, higher responsibility and greater insight than
most of us have ever experienced before.
The Reiki 3 course includes training in both healing and teaching. The course
includes a detailed review of Reiki 1 and 2. This gives the student and teacher
an opportunity to exchange concepts and experiences that reveal the breadth of
the Reiki discourse. It is also important that you are truly well-versed in all of
the skills, techniques and subtleties of the first two levels before progressing to
level 3. Very soon, you will be a Reiki Master conducting courses on your own
and you will need to know the planning, preparation and procedures that go into
a Reiki course.
As Reiki Master, it is essential that you become skilled in meditation for the
benefits in concentration, mindfulness and wisdom that it develops. All Reiki
training courses, healings or attunements begin with a meditation session.
During the first morning of this Reiki Master course you and your teacher will
discuss the following topics:
Teacher’s Heart

Curriculum for Teaching Reiki 1
The most effective way to review specific skills taught in Reiki 1 is to go step-
by-step through the curriculum to be sure you are familiar with each procedure
and topic. The following table shows all the activities, techniques and topics
that were included in a recent Reiki and naturopathy course for 5 participants.
See the Reiki 1 manual for details on history, hand positions and chakras, etc.

Explication of the Five Reiki Principles
The five principles of Reiki are introduced in level 1. While the principles
themselves are quite basic, it is important to approach them in a more advanced
manner as you progress in your Reiki training. This section defines the
principles at both basic and advanced levels for you to share with your students
and to incorporate into your own practice.
Easier said then done. To arrest our anxiety requires strong mindfulness during
the process of worrying. Observe the movement of your thoughts carefully
during your meditation and mindfulness practice. Each time a worry arises,
observe it with great scrutiny, but do not chase it away or deny it. Just watch it
until it naturally fades away. This practice supports you to know your worries
well without falling prey to them.
This one is also quite easy, as long as everything is going well. Be mindful
anytime that you feel anger arising in your heart. Watch it like you would keep
your eyes on a mean dog; don’t turn your back on it and don’t threaten it, but be
very alert to its danger. Ultimately, catch your anger arising before it converts
into words or actions; arrest it before it becomes a full-blown thought.
Mindfulness through meditation will greatly assist you in this process.

Guided Chakra Meditation
The following example is for the root chakra. Refer to the detailed charts in
your level 2 manual for information on all of the chakras. Speak softly, gently,
firmly, maintaining strong mindfulness throughout the session.
Each chakra requires about 5 minutes. Continue guiding the students through
each chakra, interjecting brief suggestions to help them maintain a meditative
state. The complete meditation takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Curriculum for Teaching Reiki 2
Studying the Reiki Master level includes a thorough review of Reiki 2. Be sure
you are familiar with all of the concepts and techniques in the Reiki 2 manual
and prepare yourself for teaching the material. Reiki 2 requires two days of
teaching, preferably on alternate days so the student has time to practice
techniques and skills in between classes. The following table shows the
curriculum used for a recent course in Bangkok. On the first day of a Reiki 2
course, the teacher introduces the following materials:

Curriculum for Teaching Reiki 2 (continued)
On the second day of the Reiki 2 course, the teacher introduces the following
materials.
After you finish teaching a Reiki 2 course, arrange at least one follow up
meeting with your student in person to share experience. Also arrange a series
of distance healings between your student and yourself.

Developing yourself as a Healer and Teacher
Pranayama
The Indian name for energy or life force is Prana. The science of Yogic
breathing is known as Pranayama. These exercises will help you gain greater
control over your breath, deepen your breathing, and develop keener awareness
of your breathing process. These techniques are essential for purification of the
nadis, or energy channels of the body.
Calming breath: Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Breathe in
through the left nostril only, inhaling for a count of 5 seconds, exhaling for a
count of 10 seconds. Breathe deeply, first expanding the diaphragm, then the
ribs, then the chest. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Breathing in the left nostril is
cooling moon energy called Ida, which is used for calming, especially suitable
in the evenings before sleep.
Activating breath: Close the left nostril with the ring and pinkie fingers of your
right hand. Breath in through the right nostril only for 5 seconds, exhale for 10
seconds. Breathe deeply, first expanding the diaphragm, the ribs and finally the
chest. Repeat 15 to 20 times. Breathing in the right nostril activates sun energy
called Pingala, suitable in the mornings.

Pranayama (continued)
Alternative nostril breathing: Close your right nostril with your right thumb,
place your index and middle fingers on your brow chakra. Breathe in through
the left nostril for a count of 6 seconds. Close your left nostril with the ring and
pinkie fingers. Exhale for a count of 12 seconds out your left nostril. Now,
repeat the process vice versa, breathing in through the left, then out through the
right. Repeat 15 to 20 times.
Jalandhara Bandha
Uddiyana Bandha
Begin by fully exhaling and emptying the lungs. Pull your abdomen up and in.
In addition to stimulating the liver and digestion system, this bandha raises vital
energy upwards through your chakras.
Moolah Bandha
Pull your rectal muscle up and in, thus locking your root chakra. This prevents
energy from flowing out through your legs into the earth. This bandha (also
referred to in the Hui Yin position) is essential for channelling energy during
the attunement process. It needs to be practiced and held for up to one minute
in preparation for passing Reiki attunements.

Developing yourself as a Healer and Teacher (continued)
Meditation
Meditation helps you awaken and transform your consciousness, moving you
away from a self-centred ego to be more aware of universal self. In Andean
cosmology, by becoming invisible, the Shaman truly masters healing. In the
Buddhist sense, this is Anatta, or non-self. By releasing attachment to ego, we
become one with the universe and energy flows unimpeded.
Meditation calms the mind and increases concentration skill. This prevents the
mind from jumping around. This is especially important when doing distance
healings or passing attunements where strong focus is required. Meditation
increases energy and vitality, giving the skill to overcome depression, anger,
fear and other mental barriers to perception of the divine order. It helps us
become aware of negative thought patterns and habits, and thus overcome them.
It helps us move from a doing mode into a being mode, bringing greater peace
and equanimity to our minds, and contentment with what we have, rather than
obsessing with what we want.
Practice
Select the most suitable time for daily meditation; first thing in the
morning is optimum
Sit cross-legged or in lotus position, moving as little as possible
Begin by sitting 20 minutes per session, gradually up to one hour
Observe the breath as it passes through the nostrils
When the mind wanders, bring it back to observing the breath
Repeat the above two steps thousands and thousands of times!
Mentally scan your body from head to toe, from toe to head (body scan)
Observe all sensations without attachment, without analysis
Maintain attention on the breathing
Be aware that you are nature, or an observer of nature (depersonalization)
rather than some being separate from nature
Be aware of each thought that arises, without attachment, simply observe
Maintain attention on the breathing
14
Therapeutic Communication
Each communication has a unique flavour; some patients talk the entire time
while others say little more than mmm. Initiate conversation before healing
begins to assess the direction in which the session may go. If your patient
becomes very still and taciturn during the healing, respect their silence and save
the discussion for later.
Here are a few sample questions that you might raise during healing sessions.
More importantly, listen to your own intuition, and you will know what topics
need to be addressed.
What outcome would you like from this healing? Can you visualize that?
For example, while healing the root chakra, you may see an image in your mind
of an older man. Knowing the chakra system, you might deduce that this image
relates to the patient’s early relationship with their father. Proceed to ask
general, non-invasive questions about their father to see how much is on their
minds. This is intuitive, therapeutic, energetic co-healing!

Knowledge and use of Level 3 Symbols
Until this point, most of your training for level 3 has been a review of the first
two levels and preparing you to teach those levels. This section introduces the
essential elements of healing and passing attunements with the symbols used in
Reiki 3. This section of your training includes the following topics:

Distance Healing with Reiki 3
Use these sample sentences to guide you in writing your healing requests.
Please heal (name) at the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional levels.
Specifically, help reduce her stress, headaches and sore neck at the origin
of these problems.
Let this energy flow from 1 to 3 p.m. during his exam on Friday to achieve
optimum results.
Please provide Ann with the insight to change her lifestyle and diet to
bring a complete, life-long cure for this disease.
Please help Maureen gain insight into the causes of her illness, and guide
her on the path for a strong, long-term recovery from all illness.
Please repeat this healing process on Wednesday and Friday nights at 10.

Modern Dai Ko Mio (Anti-clockwise)
This symbol can also be drawn anti-clockwise for a variety of different uses. It
is basically the same symbol, but it changes characteristics in the following
ways:
20
Knowledge and use of Dai Ko Mio (Traditional)
21
Knowledge and use of Raku
The Raku symbol is used specifically during attunements. The version shown
here is a modern variation. The symbol consists of a clockwise spiral
resembling the modern DKM and a lightening bolt. The traditional Raku
consists only of the lightening bolt.
Raku is the master symbol used to complete attunements. The spiral is drawn
behind the student’s head, with the left and right diagonal lines drawn down the
arms of the student. The lightening bolt is drawn from the top of the spine
down to the ground, into the centre of the earth.
Only in rare cases would you use the Raku for healing purposes. There are no
guidelines for such cases except to use it wisely and cautiously only in
exceptional cases such as great danger or imminent death.
22
Passing Attunements
Meditation
To begin, it is wise for both Reiki Master and student to sit quietly in
meditation. The student should be seated in a chair, feet flat on the floor, in
preparation for receiving the attunement. You might lead a whole body
relaxation or do yoga beforehand to open energy channels.
Purification
The training area should be physically clean and free from clutter. Remove any
metallic jewellery and watches. Purify the area using incense, keeping a candle
burning throughout the initiation process. Both teacher and student need to
wash hands and be purified with incense or a smudge stick. Use CKR and SHK
to protect and purify the area. If you like, students can participate in the
purification process.
23
Student asks for support
It is very powerful to ask the student what kind of change they would like to
make in their life in order to become a purer, more powerful channel for Reiki.
Have the student request support for overcoming specific barriers in life. In the
case of Reiki 1 where there are traditionally four attunements, ask the student to
request support during each attunement.
Return your hands to the crown chakra. Hold the Hui Yin position as described
earlier. Visualize the modern DKM, mentally say its name 3 times, then see it
passing from your heart, out your palm chakras and into the student’s crown
chakra. Slightly open your hands and blow the symbol into the crown while
visualizing it going deep to the centre of their being.
Take another deep breath, hold the Hui Yin position, and visualize CKR, SHK,
HSZ and traditional DKM flowing into their crown, repeating the name of each
symbol 3 times. Open your hands and blow the 4 symbols into their crown.
Lift your arms up and out in a wide arc, greatly opening the crown chakra and
profoundly connecting with sacred Reiki universal energy.
24
Blowing symbols into the heart
For Reiki 2, tap CKR, SHK and HSZ into the palm 3 times.
For Reiki 3, tap the modern DKM and the traditional DKM
into the palm 3 times.
Finally, blow all of the symbols into their palm, visualizing each one as it passes
from your heart into their palm chakra. Cover their hand again to seal in the
symbols. Reverse the hands and repeat the above steps for the left hand.
25
throat chakra. Bring their hands back to the heart. Visualize and mentally name
the 5 symbols going into the heart chakra. Release their hands and step back.
Employing Raku
Place your hands back on the student’s crown chakra. Mentally thank Reiki for
guidance and ask Reiki to correct any errors you may have made or complete
any steps you may have missed. Gently lift your hands skyward, opening the
crown chakra to heaven.
Return to the front of the student and hold their hands in yours. Make a
blessing of this nature: You are now attuned to Reiki (Level 1, 2, 3). We thank
Reiki for providing the love and light, wisdom and compassion to use Reiki for
the benefit of all beings. Thank the student for making themselves available as
a channel of Reiki. Step away from the student and instruct them to do a self-
healing to allow the energy to flow.
Offer a glass of water and inquire how the student feels; share your experience.
Be sure to wash your hands well and sweep all energies away from your own
aura upon completion, and before attuning the next student.
26
Notes on passing attunements
Each attunement is a unique, sacred experience. Student and Master alike may
feel great joy, or a release of tears; some may even giggle. Some see colours,
feel an otherworldly presence, some are speechless. All have experienced a
very profound spiritual initiation.
The attunement for Reiki 1 is traditionally done 4 times. Modern teachers may
opt to pass the attunement only one time, asking Reiki to repeat the initiation
the other 3 times. This certainly saves time in cases when there are numerous
students to be attuned. If you have the time, I suggest giving the full 4
attunements until you are confident that you are channelling the necessary
power to complete the process in just one initiation.
The Reiki 2 and Reiki 3 attunements are traditionally done 2 times each. With
experience, you may opt to conduct these ceremonies just once, asking Reiki to
repeat it for you. Whenever possible, I do the complete series of attunements
as described in the traditional method.
Nevertheless, I employ the Hui Yin empowerment
position to optimize the energy that I am capable
of channelling.
27
Using a Pendulum
The human body absorbs subtle energy from the environment and passes this
information to the subconscious. The muscles respond at a very delicate level.
A pendulum reflects this muscular activity by swinging or circling in response
to the energies being experienced.
Using a pendulum during healings is very helpful for diagnosing issues and
confirming your intuition. To begin using your pendulum, sit very still in a
meditative state, allow the pendulum to hang freely from your fingertips, and
mentally intend it to begin tracing over these arrows.
Once your pendulum is moving freely, begin asking questions and making
requests to see what the pendulum will show you. Request your pendulum to
indicate the direction of “yes,” until a definite direction can be perceived.
Then, request the pendulum to demonstrate the direction of “no” until the
meaning of “no” is clearly indicated.
28
Request the pendulum to illustrate “no information possible,” “positive,”
“negative” and “neutral” until all indications are clear. Go back to the
beginning and check all responses again until you are confident that the
responses are accurate and consistent. Fill in this chart as you determine the
indications of your personal pendulum. In a few weeks, check it again to
confirm that your readings are accurate and stable.
No
No information
possible
Positive
Negative
Neutral
Begin training and testing your pendulum by asking some basic questions such
as, “Is my shirt blue?” “Is today Thursday?” “What effect do scary movies
have on me?” “What is my feeling about classical music?” Ask a series of
“Yes-no” and “Positive-negative” questions until you get steadily accurate
readings. Properly phrased questions are essential to the accuracy of your
reading. Also confirm your readings by asking, “Is this a true answer?”
“Have my own feelings influenced this answer?”
29
Reading with your Pendulum
Relax in a non-thinking mode, with only positive motives. Once you know the
patterns and answers that you can get from using a pendulum, begin asking
more difficult questions that you don’t actually know what the response will be.
For example, pick up a piece of food, hold it to your solar plexus and ask, “Is
this food positive or negative for me?

Requirements for Certification
2. Perform a self healing every day for the first 21 days (at least) after
receiving your attunement to Reiki 3; focus particularly on using DKM to
heal yourself on the spiritual level
6. Arrange and receive a distant healing from your teacher or from other
participants in your course
9. Practice using a pendulum until you get reliable and consistent readings
Keep a journal of all these healing experiences, as they will be useful references
for when you begin teaching Reiki to others. When you have completed the
requirements, please notify me and I will issue your certificate. Many
blessings! Please write or call with any questions or concerns that arise from
your Reiki experience.
Sincerely Yours,
Tom
