SIEVE ANALYSIS

AIM:
To find out particle population and the specific surface area of the given sample.

APPARATUS:
Sieve , shaker , sieves

PROCEDURE
1. Take 500g of the sample
2. Arrange all the sieves (minimum) largest one is at the top and thinnest one is at the
bottom.
3. Run the shaker for atleast 5 minutes . Weigh the mass retained on each screen.

OBSERVATION:
1) Shape factor for sand = λ = 1.36
2) Density of sand = 1.7 gm /cm3 = 1.7 * 10-3 gm / mm3

∑(Xi/Dpi) = 1/ µm = 1/mm
∑(Xi/(Dpi)3) = (1/ µm)3= 1/(mm)3

CALCULATIONS:
1) Specific surface area

Aw = ∑(Xi/Dpi) =

2) Particle Population

Nw = ∑(Xi/(Dpi)3) =
Ꝭp

RESULTS:
1) Specific surface area (Aw) =
2) Particle Population (Nw) =

CONCLUSION:
The sieve analysis of the sample by using sieves gives the specific area and particle
population of the sample.
