Circles of Caring Community

OSPI Social Studies Learning Standards:


Civic: C4.1.2 Explain, give examples, and demonstrate ways to show good citizenship at school.
History: H3.1.1 Identify that there are different family structures and dynamics.

Learning Target
Students will identify people in their caring community and give examples of how they care.

Materials
- Blank paper
- Pen / Pencil
- Coloring utensils
- optional: pictures, scissors, and glue

Session 1
Class discussion, discussing the different ways people show they care.
Read aloud: Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller
Example comprehension and discussion questions:
- Can anyone make a connection to our story?
- If you were Tanisha, what are some ways you would have wanted to be shown caring?
- What were some of the ways the main character thought she could show she cared to Tanisha?
- How did the main character show Tanisha she cared?
On the left side of the Caring Community T-chart, record ways people show they care

Session 2
Class brainstorm, who are people in our life that have shown they care about us?
Read aloud: And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell
Example comprehension and discussion questions:
- How did Roy and Silo care for Tango?
Introduce “Community” (a group of people with common interest)
- Who do we see in our school community?
- Who are some people in our lives that show us they care?
On the right side of the Caring Community T-chart, record ideas of people who show they care

Session 3
Teacher models project
1. Write name in center of paper
2. Draw a spiral going outwards from name
3. Write names of people in spiral leaving space between
4. Draw pictures or symbols of how these people show they care
5. Optional: if students want and parents allow, students can use pictures of their caring community
to print, cut, and glue onto their circle of caring community.
You can either give students time in class to work on project or assign as homework.
In subsequent days, allow students to share their circles of caring community project.
