School: Julian Cho Technical High School Unit Topic: Geometry: Trigonometry 1 & 2

Subject: Mathematics Date & Duration: January 7 – 25, 2013 (3 weeks)

Class: 4 Agric., 4 Bus., 4 Const., 4 H/M, 4 Sci. Facilitators: Mr. Samuel Ack & Ms. Gabriela Rash

Introduction:
This topic introduces students to the conversion of degrees to radians and vice versa. It provides alternative methods to
calculate for length of minor arc, area of sector and area of minor segment of a circle. Students will use the radian formulae to find the
length and area of the arc and sector and segment of circle. Moreover, the unit will acquaint students with Sine Rule and Cosine Rule
to find the length of the sides and area of non – right angle triangles and to locate position of objects using bearings.

Rationale:
It caters for the appreciation in understanding the relationship between degrees and radians after 3 weeks. After which
students should be competent in calculating the length of the minor arc, area of the sector of a circle and area of minor segment of a
circle using degree formulae and radian formulae. Students will know how to apply the Sine Rule and the Cosine Rule along with the
application of bearings. The topic will also enable the revision of basic concepts in trigonometry towards the preparation for ATLIB
and CXC candidates.

Unit Goals:
a) To convert degrees to radians.
b) To convert radians to degrees.
c) To calculate for the length of the minor arc of a circle.
d) To calculate the area of the minor sector of a circle.
e) To calculate the area of the minor segment of a circle.
f) To use the trigonometrical ratios of special angles.
g) Use the Sine Rule and Cosine Rule in problems involving triangles and circles.
h) Calculate the area of a triangle given two sides and the included angle by mean of the formula.
Area of ∆ABC = ½abSin C
i) State the position between objects.
