African and Indigenous Slavery in the Americas 15th century-19th century

This is an interpretative analysis of several accounts of slavery in our continent (but also the
transatlantic trade). In this Unit we are exploring the causes and consequences of the Spanish
Conquest in the Americas, the moral implications, and the consequences it has\had on our
population.

Please read pages 2-7(only the first three lines of page 7): until: ´´Atlantic litigation might take
place if someone who claimed to be white felt he had been insulted by being called a mestizo
(Jaramillo Uribe, 1968: 181–6).´´ and answer the following questions: This assignment will
require more than one work period. Please submit question #1 as progress for our first class.
Paragraphs should always be 5-8 sentences. Be analytical with the answer, you do not need to
always coincide with the authors; be critical. Must use at least two pieces of evidence per answer
and at least one counterclaim per answer.

1) How was slavery different for the indigenous than for the blacks?

2) What was the moral justification for Spanish conquerors to enslave indigenous and
African populations?
