Statistical Comparison of Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy Systems design with Genetic Algorithms in the Case of Three Tank Water Control Leticia Cervantes, Oscar Castillo Tijuana Institute of Technology Tijuana, Mexico Tetyy2685@hotmail.com,ocastllo@tectijuana.mx. Abstract— In this paper we show a statistical comparison using fuzzy systems for the benchmark ease of three tank water level control. In this statistical comparison an empirical typest fuzzy system is applied and a type fuzzy system with genetic algorithm is also used. After that a types? fuzzy system is used to achieve the control and a genetic algorithm is used to optimize this type-2 fuzzy system. These results are used to make a statistical comparison with the purpose to show the difference ‘when type-I and type-2 fuzzy systems are used with genetic algorithm or without optimization Keywords; Granular computing; Genetic ALgorithm; Type-2 Fuzzy System; Fussy Control 1. InTRopucrion This paper focuses on the fields of control, fuzzy logic and granular computing. When two or more areas ate applied to solve a problem in a case study, the result in many cases is better. The main contribution in this paper is the proposed granular approach for control, which is applied in a benchmark cease, this method can be use in many cases of study. In this paper the benchmark ease of three tanks water level control is used to prove the proposed method and the fuzzy systems. To control the water Ievel in the three tanks it is necessary to control the $ valves. These valves are positioned between the 3 tanks and each valve needs to control the openness and closeness to provide water to each tank. For this reason 5 fuzzy systems are necessary, each fuzzy system controls one valve. The fuzzy systems have | output and 1 or 2 inputs depending on the valve, if the valve is between two tanks, 2 inputs are necessary. In this case the levels on the tanks ate the inputs and the openness of the valve is the output of each fuzzy system. First, a type-1 fuzzy system was applied to control the water level, then a genetic algorithm was used to ‘optimize the membership functions of each fuzzy system. When results were obtained using type-I fuzzy system the proposed method is applied, This proposed method is based on granular computing, this granularity is used in the type-2 fuzzy system in this ease. The type-2 fuzzy system is used to achieve the water control. After using a type-2 fuzzy system a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the membership function to achieve the control of each valve. When results were obtained 978-1-4799.0348-1/13/$31.00 ©2013 IEEE 4 statistical comparison using the t student test was performed In this paper the statistical comparison is presented and results, show the differences when the case of study uses type-1 or type-2 fuzzy systems, both using genetic algorithms or without optimization, The rest of the paper is organized as follows: In section 2 ‘we present some basic concepts to understand this work, in section 3 we define the proposed method and problem description, and finally conclusions are presented in section 4, IL, BACKGROUND AND BASIS CONCEPTS In this section some basic concepts are provide to understand the paper. We provide in this section some basic concepts needed for this work. A. Granular Computing Graduated granulation, or equivalently fuzzy granulation, is a unique feature of fuzzy logic. Graduated granulation is inspired by the way in which humans deal with complexity and imprecision. The concepts of graduation, granulation, and ‘graduated granulation play key roles in granular computing, Graduated granulation underlies the concept of a linguistic variable, ie, a variable whose values are words rather than rmumbers. In retrospect, this concept, in combination with the associated concept of a fuzzy if-then rule, may be viewed as a first step toward granular computing[1][2][3][4]. Fuzzy and rough set theories, neutrosophic computing, quotient space belief functions, machine learning, databases, data mining, cluster analysis, interval computing, more recently social computing, all involve granular computing [5]. Information granulation has emerged as one of the fundamental concepts ff information processing giving tise to the discipline of Granular Computing. Three general tendencies encountered in Granular Computing can be identified: (a) a design of information granules of higher order, (b) a development of information granules of higher ‘ype, and (c) a formation of hybrid information granules [6], B. Type-2 Fuczy Logic A type-2 fuzzy system is similar to its type-1 counterpart, the major difference being that at least one of the fuzzy sets in the rule base is a Type-2 Fuzzy Set, Hence, the outputs of the 1056 inference engine are Type-2 Fuzzy Sets, and a type-reducer is needed to convert them into a Type-1 Fuzzy Set before
