RAJ [AND DRINKING WATER & SANITATION GOVERNMENT OF INDIA KRISH BHAWAN, NEW DELHI wee aa MESSAGE ‘As we mark three years of good governance, it gives me Immense pleasure to present to you this compendium of the achievements of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, My Ministry focusses on two key flagship programmes of the Government — the swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) in the sanitation sector, and the Natio nal Rural Drinking Wate r Programme (NRDWP) in the water sector, ‘The Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) was launched on 2" October, 2014 after the Hon'ble Prime Minister's clarion callto all countrymen from the ramparts of the Red Fort to join hands for cleantiness and sanitation in the country, during his, historic address on August 15%, 2024. He spoke movingly about the condition of women in rural India and said, “Presently, our mothers and sisters are forced ‘0 defecate in the open. Do we lke this situation? Is it not our responsibility to arrange for tolletsat least?” Today, as we celebrate the 3* anniversary of the Government, 1am proud to share that the individual household toilet coverage in rural India under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) has now increased to nearly 64% fram 42% in 2014. We are also well on our way to achieving the target of an Open Defecation Free India by October 2, 2019. Over 1.95 lakh villages, 137 districts and 3 states in the country have already declared themselves as Open Defecation Free. Significant progress has also been made under NRDW?.
