Alpha, Beta and Gamma College of Engineering Students Bus
scheduling
Alpha, Beta, and Gamma (ABG) college of Engineering is operating as an Educational Trust in Chennai from
the early days of privatization of professional education. When the college started functioning in the new
campus on the outskirts of Chennai in 1991, the management decided to provide transportation between
various parts of Chennai city and the college. Initially, ten buses started operating between the college
and the city. As the number of courses offered increased, the college's total strength also increased, and
now buses are running, covering 40 routes from various parts of Chennai to the college. The college has
its own five buses and one ambulance, which are used as spare capacity. Regular routes are contracted
from the market. A transport committee headed by a Convener is formed to take care of the smooth
operation of buses. The staff in charge of the buses (one teaching and one supporting) ensures the buses'
smooth functioning.
Mr. Ravindeer is the transport co-coordinator of ABG. He needs to plan the vehicle trips between various
locations in and around Chennai to transport the students and staff members. There are about 2000
students and 200 staff members who would be using the service. And 40 routes need to be considered.
Each route may contain 5 to 10 pickup points.

8. Get quotes from various other transporters and plan to have either all/some vehicles from
the college or contractors.
9. Inform the students and staff of the change in schedule (in case of emergencies)
How will Ravindeer manage the scheduling of buses which leave from the garage to first pick up point and
drop students in the morning at campus? Buses are parked at college and go in the evening at various
locations, and the first point of pick up is the last point of drop.
