Common Faults

FS – Failure to Serve
 Missed the ball after a toss
 Catch the ball after a toss
BS – Bad service
 Double bounce on the server’s end or table
 The ball slightly touch the net and falls back on the server’s table
 Slightly touch the net and fall on the ground (not bouncing on the table of the receiver’s
table
 The ball goes directly outside
 The ball did not bounce on the server’s table
IS - Illegal service
 The ball is held by the fingers before the toss
 The hand is cupped during projection before the toss
 The free hand is lower than the height of the table
 Service is executed on top of playing area.
 The ball is not tossed before you hit the ball.

Common Faults Return

FR – Failure to return
 missed the ball after a good service or during rally.
 Catch the ball

BR – Bad return
 Failed to return the ball on the first strike and struck the ball twice
 The ball bounced twice already and failed to hit the ball after it’s first bounce
 The server served and the receiver hit the ball, slightly touch the net but bounces back on the
receiver’s table. (the ball did not cross over the net)
 The server served, receiver hit the ball but the ball did not bounce on the other side of the table.

IR – Illegal return
 The ball is struck with the side of the racket.
 The free hand is touching the playing surface during a return.
 The net is touched by any part of the body or anything the player is wearing.
 The playing area is moved by the player.
 Out of order of return during rally in doubles match.
 The server served but the ball did not bounce on the receiver’s table but return it. (stealing)

L – LET
 A rally when no one earns a point
 When the umpire is doubtful of the legality of a service.
 When the receiver is not yet ready, provided it is not returned.
 During unavoidable circumstances.
 When interrupted by officials.
 Good service and the ball slightly touched the net
