Readiness for the World of Work and Career Trends

and Opportunities in The New Normal

The webinar has beautify set up with the prominent speakers, ma’am Carel as the first
speaker and followed by ma’am Marjorie as the second speaker of the webinar. The first
speaker opened the webinar with the topic about the usual scenario of a new graduate
hunting for a specific job. She explained the hardships of the new graduate and the things
that they should took to themselves as an advantage to others in looking for jobs. Moreover,
the second speaker discussed about the labor market that should a new graduate should
learn about like the right and obligation of individual; for employees and employers.

I begin with the first speaker; the first speaker is a head of guidance services and
counselling office of a prominent school somewhere in Kidapawan. She opened with the
topic of wearing the winning personality. This topic focuses all about personality and the
thing that individual or a new graduate should take care of himself/herself as an advantage
of what he/she might do after graduation. Moreover, in myself, even though at the moment I
am currently a 4th year student I can say that I already overviewed myself of what are the
things I needed to develop and learning other basic skills in computer. Yet, with the new
normal scenario with our society and a fast-changing world, I must say that I have to be
competitive and need to be competitive in order to perform my very best of what opportunity
I have in the near future. In addition, the speaker also discussed the observations from the
top recruitments’ agencies about the things that a young employee should acquire. She
additionally introduced the career tools on job hunting, how to pass for an interview with
proper decorum and on how to make proper resume. Furthermore, considering that
everybody should do everything towards success because according to the first speaker,
there is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.

On the other hand, the second speaker discussed about her mean topic, the labor
market. She defined the labor market or usually known as the job market is the place where
workers and employers interact with each other. In this place, the employers concentrate to
hire the best and the workers compete for the best satisfying the job. The speaker
considered also the factors affecting the labor market like globalization, demography,
education and training, technological changed, government policy and etc. I learned also
about to priority occupational requirements in labor market like in-demand occupations,
hard-to-fill occupations and cross-cutting occupations. These are the job opportunities which
are high in demand but less are qualified. Towards the discussion, the speaker added a
topic about rights and duties of workers where incudes due process for procedural and
substantive due process.

In summary, the webinar is nice and the speakers are really good. A lot of learnings I
gained about the real word after graduation and in labor market. Yet, being a student, I
visualize a lot of things like my goals and dreams in life however without a proper
preparations and self-development I couldn’t achieved to those goals. The webinar
readiness for the world of work and career trends and opportunities in the new normal is
really great.
Business Correspondence

The speaker, ma’am Bonefacia has provided a great presentation about the
main topic. She defined her topic as a business correspondence that means the
exchange of information in a written format for the process of business activities and
it is very helpful in business industries. Correspondence is very helpful between
parties or sectors because it is the written communication between persons.
Business correspondence is what we are doing everyday like how we
communicate when we are going to buy in online platform, how we communicate
with our school despite online classes and etc. Even though we are not into business
we are likely doing this thing regularly to communicate with the outside world making
business because of the pandemic. For instance, email considered also a form of
business correspondence when we are representing a company or for purpose of
business. Moreover, written communication is important in a business for a various
reason; exchanging information while maintaining professional relationships between
organizations, employees, and clients according to the speaker.
There are various reasons why business correspondence is important, some
of them are in maintaining proper relationship, serves as evidence, create and
maintain goodwill, inexpensive and convenient, formal communication, and helps in
the expansion of business. Individually, each of these importance was discussed by
the speaker. In addition, the speaker also included the types of business
correspondence; internal correspondence, external correspondence, routine
correspondence, sales correspondence, personalized correspondence, circulars and
etc. I have a great learning from each of these correspondences and I could finally
say that business correspondence is a complex one. Additionally, in the webinar, the
speaker discussed the 7 principles of business correspondence that may help the
business to develop and achieve its mission, these are; consideration such as your
attitude, courtesy, clarity, concreteness, correctness, conciseness, completeness
and etc., which are helpful in evaluating a business or company. Lastly, the speaker
tackled about the business letter formats. There are four basic business letter
formats; full block style, semi-block style, modified block style, and modified semi-
block style.
To sum up, another great webinar has ended of the day. The learnings given
are concise and helpful for our future works.
Electric Transmission and Distribution System

Sir Michael, the speaker from the Cotabato Electric Cooperative Inc.
(COTELCO) and a former professor gives a nice and informative lecture about his
work being an electrical engineer and the informative background about COTELCO
where he works.
According to the speaker, COTELCO is one of 120 electric cooperatives
around the Philippines which the main function is to provide energy for the whole
cotabatenyos. Honestly, there are terms in the webinar that the speaker is telling that
new to me and I can’t adjust, however, the speaker really gave everything to the
clarifications of the topics being discussed. He introduced the EPIRA LAW which
governs the electric distribution in the country.
The speaker clarifies the meaning of electrical transmission and distribution
system which he refers as the different stages of carrying electricity over poles and
wires from generators to a home or business. The primary distinction between the
two is the voltage level at which electricity moves in each stage. After electricity has
been generated, a system of electrical wires carries the electricity from source of
generation to our homes and business. These lines can be found overhead and
transmission and distribution lines make up what is called the grid. Transmission and
distribution are two separate stages or systems on the grid. Transmission is the
highway of electricity delivery. It refers to the part of electricity delivery and moves
large amounts of power at a high voltage so that many transformers are being built
to step up or step down the voltage source. Yet, the COTELCO has its own electrical
system and its own operation. It has a general manager and has six different
branches that operates the whole operations of the COTELCO company.
Mostly, the COTELCO is an energy distributor company which dependent
from the energy suppliers from the different parts of Mindanao like FDC, SMC Global
Power, Aboitiz Power, and etc. to augment the energy source of the province. The
company gets its supplied mostly on conventional power plants like coal-fired power
plant, geothermal power plant, and etc. which supply energy automatically unlike the
non-conventional power plants. Moreover, the speaker also discussed deeply every
analytical computation on the energy being distributed. He also said that importance
of safety which is their major concern because they are dealing always with the high
voltages of energy source.
In addition, the speaker also clarifies that the COTELCO uses advanced
technology and software for their operations to lighten their job. Yet, to work on a
electric company is one of my dream jobs being an engineering student. I gathered
enough information from this webinar and thanks to the speaker and for the whole
USM-KCC.
POWER GENERATING UNIT
GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT

The webinar is very much pleasurable on my side because I am a mechanical

engineering. Yet, the speaker, Engr. Bersamina is an alumnus of the school and has
a lot of experienced in the geothermal powerplant industry.
The speaker is currently working in Energy Development Corporation under
the Lopez’ group. Despite this pandemic, the speaker provides the basic
components and diagrams on the geothermal powerplant. Geothermal energy refers
to heat energy contained in underground reservoirs of hot water and steams= which
naturally occurring within the earth while geothermal power is the generation of
electrical power from stored heat underneath the Earth. The speaker also provided
contract areas of operations of their company with the total installed powerplants
capacity of 1,202 MW; North Negros-49 MW, South Negros-192.5 MW, BacMan-150
MW, Leyte-708 MW, and Mt. Apo-103.23 MW. Moreover, Mt. Apo is located in our
locality and the speaker provided that the Mt. Apo Geothermal Project is a 701-ha
reservation area which the trees and plants help to maintain the equilibrium process
needed in carrying a geothermal powerplant.
The speaker provides basic features of a geothermal system which he
included that geothermal is a water-based resource. Therefor, since it is a water-
based resource that means the water in surroundings; rain, reservoir, caprock, hot
springs and water landscape are the primary ingredients to sustain a geothermal
power which utilizes the magma underneath the Earth. It has many systems and
components in building a geothermal powerplant, we have the Basic Fluid Collection
and Recycling System (FCRS) Components; the production well, two-phase line,
separator, stream line, re-injection or brine line, re-injection well, and control system.
Each of the part contains major functions in sustaining the underground energy.
For the EDC as a producer of energy it supplies many distributions company
such as COTELCO. The speaker provides electric flow diagram from generation to
consumers which is very complex to understand. Moreover, the powerplant is under
the NGCP which provides its control over the distribution aspect of the energy
distributed. The geothermal powerplant has many long pipes that could measure 1 or
more in kilometers in length and wells that also kilometers in depth.
In addition, the speaker said that the Mt. Apo geothermal is using two
powerplant, consist of 1x52.3 MW and 1x50.93 MW, both are Mitsubishi condensing
units. For operational flexibility, the high pressure streamlines of both plants are
interconnected. Lastly, having basic learnings coming from the EDC engineer is
blessed.
INDUSTRIAL AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY

Industrial and occupational safety is really nice topic coming from sir Sabit,
the speaker. The topic is very well explained hence, OSH subject is in our curriculum
under ME-326 for Mechanical Engineering. It reminds me a lot from the topic that
safety is the first canon in the Code of Ethics for Engineers states that engineers
shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public. An engineer’s
responsibility is to use engineering tools and technology to ensure that places that
are dangerous to work at are as safe as possible. It is important for an Engineering
student, like me to have basic knowledge on occupational safety and health.
Likewise, being an engineering student and someday will work mostly in a prone of
dangers and accidents, I have to learned every aspect of safety knowledge as
possible and always put in mind.
The speaker discussed smoothly about the topic even though it costs a
semester to deliver such subject. I learned the difference between the meaning of
danger and accidents, including the types of accidents and the classifications of
danger. The speaker additionally points out in occupational safety including topics
about accidents, housekeeping, and materials handling. Moreover, the speaker
speaks about industrial hygiene practices such as exposure assessment and
instituting control measures minimizes occupational accidents and diseases and
their costs as well as enhance productivity. It is interconnected with the different
aspects of work research and development, production, health, safety and
management. Furthermore, in industrial hygiene the speaker emphasizes its
definition, the workplace hazards, work environment measurement, occupational
health, personal protective equipment and etc.
On the one hand, industrial and occupational safety is important. Providing
the data given that many accidents happening every day and oddly many lives are
wasted in some aspect due to the lack of safety awareness. Yes, I agreed to the
speaker that is really hard to deal with accidents but through proper actions and
cautions we can minimize it. The standardized protocol in the work place nowadays
has strengthen and many protocols are need to follow.
Promoting safety and health is a great ethical responsibility in industrial
workplace, I have viewed it together with my future profession being an engineer.
Safety education is an essential part of all courses and has only been recognized
several years ago due to changes in the attitude of the government and the industrial
sector towards safety. The goal is to promote a safe and healthy environment. OSH
may also protect coworkers, family members, employers, customers and many
others who might be affected by the workplace environment. Abiding this guidance of
safety that I learned from sir, the speaker is simply like promoting and maintaining
the highest degree of physical, mental and social wellbeing of workers in all
occupations.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

The speaker, ma’am Oquendo discussed about relations between personality

development and human relations which she emphasized that these in real world will
go hand-in-hand. She also emphasized that our development of our personality can
affect our social relations. Moreover, personality is a complex one and studying it
includes the context of society. Our behavior is the act we act in general, especially
in relation to the situation we are in. Moreover, we must always be aware of
ourselves which we are going to work with our profession someday.
The speaker gave her personal point of view while giving the topic. Her
delivery is smooth and well delivered. It is being discussed that personality is the
sum of one’s characteristics. Personality development has many considerations like
our physical, intellectual, character, emotional, social, spiritual aspects and etc. Our
self could reflect in the Icebergs Theory that we have id, ego, and superego which
points the psychodynamics of personality. There are many agents of our
development and some of these mold us towards our maturity. Family, school,
church, peer group, mass media, and etc. are the agents of our development. These
agents are very influential and almost mold our entire personality. In addition, the
speaker highlighted about physical aspects such as visual poise and figure control.
Visual poise is all about how you stand, walk, sit and etc. while figure control tackled
about understanding your body. Proper self-care also discussed, yet, a well-groomed
gives more confidence and attention to someone specially in our profession. To wrap
up, understanding and developing our personality will help us no matter what field
we are.
In addition, the speaker also detailed about public relations. It is all about
engaging and building relations across numerous platforms and individuals. It is
used sometimes as techniques and strategies related in managing a group or society
to spread information. Developing our interpersonal skills will help us also to develop
our public relations. Understanding of personality enhancement greatly make us
beautiful to the people around us. Social enhancement includes social acceptance,
social-satisfaction, and self-confidence. Guiding with proper decorum of our
personality with the proper ethics in dealing with people will help and guarantee you
to success.
Along the way, understanding personal development and public relations will
give you an advantage in life. Being in a profession that always dealing with society,
really needs the basic secret of living which is understanding yourself and how can
yourself manage to connect with others. To summarize, even the webinar is long yet,
it is fun and so much learning you can get with the speaker. Being a mechanical
engineering student, I will always remember the lecture and hoping that I can glow
up sometimes.
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

Sir Edgardo, the speaker is a promising one with his experienced in the
industry. His lectures are great and everything is noted because it is clear and
concise. In my perspective, there is no thing I can think the difference between
leader and a manager however, it is much important in a workplace full of individual
and have tedious of activities and works that are needed to organized.
Sir Edgardo, the speaker begun his introductory with the definition of
leadership. He went deeply into the meaning and give some subjective thought
about it. The four leadership styles: autocratic, democratic, bureaucratic, and
transformational, has individually provides clarifications of the differences in ways
managing a group. In addition, management has been identified that as a
coordination and organization of different activities of business process and was also
tackled the functions on management and how it works on the field. The functions of
management we can always see in organizing, planning, directing, controlling and
etc. in the field of work and business proper. Also, between the lecture, the speaker
identifies the differences between a leader and manager. Furthermore, the best thing
I learned from the webinar is when the speaker fully tackled the different tools and
technologies align with the project management process. For instance, in planning
where series of steps are being executed. The old saying “Plan the Work, Work the
Plan” is an ideal thought for a group doing the project management.
At the end of the lecture, the speaker gave his time accommodating our
queries and yet, the webinar become more meaningful for the new knowledge.
Furthermore, being a future engineer means also being a future leader. We have to
make a lot of projects someday and we have to lead these projects guiding with our
knowledge and a leadership skill. The speaker also gives motivations to us on how
we can influence and guide others directing to finish what is being started and what
is needed to be started. Together with the managerial ability, dealing and controlling
things doing with the task. I learned that setting strategy and coordination within the
organization will make the goal be achievable.
To wrap up everything, even though this OJT has now become virtual at least
I gained a great learning. So much more, I thank to our OJT coordinator for this
opportunity.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT

The webinar provides good start with the distinguish speaker, sir Sore. He
delivered everything and bringing with him his experienced and connect it with his
discussion. I learned a lot even though I don’t have any background regarding with
project management.
The speaker started the meaning of the topic and differentiated it with other
related operations and provide reasons why do we need to learn it. I learned the
reasons why do companies use project management which is very crucial part in
handling projects effectively in an organization. In the project management overview,
a lot of current challenges that needed to face for an organization. Moreover, project
management provides a plan for an entire project. It has its own process or life cycle
which facilitate the project from the beginning until the project is fully done as well as
the different tools and technologies being used throughout the process. I learned
also that project management has many areas: scope, time, cost, quality, human
resource, communication, risk and etc., which the speaker detailed each definition
during the lecture.
Everything that has tackled is very diligent. It is truly aligned with my future job
as a mechanical engineer which provides basic understanding on how to manage
thing in the field. Furthermore, the speaker provides enough thoughts and
explanations regarding every subject matter that is being discussed. The common
project terms that an engineer always face in project management guild and the plan
provided in stablishing the project answering the 5-W and 2-H questions regarding in
project management. The speaker honestly provides current challenges in project
management like achieving the ROI, lack rigor in risk management, inappropriate
scope definition and etc., which provides a must for an engineer to study the project
management.
Much more, a lot of subtopics mentioned a long with the discussion of the
speaker. A lot of guidance and strategies that can be used for doing a project, a lot
of planning options that will help the engineer do and finished the job. It is a must for
an individual, like engineers to have knowledge in project management.
Lastly, it is enjoyable webinar and much learnings I gained from the topic. The
speaker is great and able to clarify and give everything about the topic. Indeed,
project management is a helpful tool to be successful.
