2. The state of New York is located in the northeastern region of the United States. New York
is bordered by Lake Erie and Lake Ontario on the west; the provinces of Ontario and
Quebec in Canada on the north; the states of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and
the Atlantic Ocean to the east; and the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south.

American tribes of Algonquian, Iroquois, and Lenape. It was claimed by Henry Hudson in
1609 for Dutch settlers, and they formed the colony of New Netherland, which was taken
over by the British in 1664. About a third of the Revolutionary War battles took place in this
state. In 1788, New York became the eleventh U.S. state.

6. Tourist attractions in New York include Ellis Island, the main facility for immigrants
entering the United States who arrived between 1892 and 1954. The Statue of Liberty is
located in New York and was given to the United States as a gift from France to celebrate
the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Niagara Falls is another
popular tourist destination, along with New York City.
