Lesson Plan in: RESEARCH

 Core Values: Competency
I. TOPIC: Qualitative Research vs. Quantitative Research
II. OBJECTIVES:
 Differentiate Quantitative Research from Qualitative research.
 Decide the suitable research in different areas of interest.

IV. TEACHING PROCEDURE/STRATEGIES
A. Daily Routine
B. Simple Recall/Review
C. Motivational Activity
D. Development of the Lesson
a. Activity: Concept Note 2
Qualitative Research- primarily an exploratory research. It is used to gain an
understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights
into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative
research.
Quantitative Research- is an objective, systematic, empirical investigation of
observable phenomena through the use of computational techniques. It highlights
numerical analysis of data hoping that the numbers yield unbiased results that can be
generalized to some larger population and explain particular observation.
b. Analysis
 Knowing the difference of Qualitative and Quantitative Research, what do you
think is easier to carry out?

Answer: I think Qualitative is easier to carry out as it is focused on the exploratory

research, because it does not need much work than quantitative as quantitative is costly and need
to do numerical analysis of data. The Qualitative just need to provide insights of the problem to
develop ideas.

Qualitative vs. quantitative research

Quantitative research Qualitative Research
Focuses on testing theories and hypotheses Focuses on exploring ideas and formulating a
theory or hypothesis
Is analyzed through math and statistical Is analyzed by summarizing, categorizing and
analysis interpreting
Mainly expressed in numbers, graphs and Mainly expressed in words
tables
Requires many respondents Requires few respondents
Closed (multiple choice) questions Open-ended questions
Key terms are: testing, measurement, Key terms are: understanding, context, complexity,
objectivity, replicability subjectivity

Qualitative data collection methods

 Interviews: Asking open-ended questions verbally to respondents.
 Focus groups: Discussion among a group of people about a topic to gather opinions
that can be used for further research.
 Ethnography: Participating in a community or organization for an extended period of
time to closely observe culture and behavior.
 Case studies: In-depth study about a person, group, event or organization.
 Literature review: Survey of published works by other authors.

Quantitative data collection methods

 Surveys: List of closed or multiple choice questions that is distributed to
a sample (online, in person, or over the phone).
 Experiments: Situation in which variables are controlled and manipulated to establish
cause-and-effect relationships.
 Observations: Observing people in a natural environment where variables can’t be
controlled.
 Content Analysis: Systematically recording the presence of certain words or themes
in a set of texts to analyze communication patterns.

d. Application: Act/#2 Identify whether the given examples are Quantitative or

Qualitative data.

1. Yes, I own a computer.

2. The chip speed of my computer is 2GHz.
3. On a scale of 1-10, my computer scores in terms of its ease use.
4. I think computers are expensive.
5. The computer with pink keyboard looks beautiful.

5.Qualitative

V. ASSIGNMENT: Answer the following questions.

1. What is subjective and objective in connection with Quantitative and Qualitative
Research?

Qualitative is primarily subjective in approach as it seeks human behaviors and reasons.

Qualitative is primarily objective as it seeks precise measurements of data gathered in a
study.
2. How can you know if the research is Quantitative? Qualitative? State your reasons.

You will know a research study is Quantitative if the research presents data or
graphs about the study while you will know a research study is Qualitative if it seeks
human behaviour and reasons.
