Professor Geryt Mortensen March - Cadenza for Snare Drum Gert Mortensen, Percussionist Gert Mortensen was born in Denmark in 1958. He was trained as a percussion soloist at the Royal College of Music in Copenhagen, and has been a member of ‘The Royal Orchestra since 1977, He quickly became recognised as one of the leading concert percussionists in the world. In 1980 Gert Mortensen received the Jacob Gade Award, in 1982 the Carl Nielsen Grant, and in 1983 the Gladsaxe Music Prize as well as the Music Crities Honourary Award. He also represented Denmark with great success at the Nordic Soloist Biennale in Stockholm, Sweden. Along with composer Per Norgaard and conductor Simon Rattle, Gert Mortensen ‘studied Indonesian gamelan music. He brought home various instruments not ordinarily found in the Western European panoply of percussion instruments. In addition to Per Norgaard, other leading Scandinavian composers such as Niels Viggo Bentzon, Sven-David Sandsirém and Poul Ruders have written works especially for Gert Mortensen. His career includes solo and symphony concerts with several Eurapean orchestras, as well as television and radio performances in most of Europe, USA, Japan and Australia. Gert Mortensen has been guest arlist at many international events including the ISCM World Music Days, and festivals in Edinburgh, bergen and Budapest. He also halds master classes at various music colleges in Europe and he is a professor of The European Community Youth Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. Gert Mortensen has made music videos and internationally acclaimed CD's for the record company BIS His repertoire encompasses the greatest works for percussion in the 20th Century. His concerts are a veritable “one-man show’, a fascinating display of instruments {rom all over the globe.
