Problem 1: (10 marks) For an ideal gas, estimate the variation of pressure with height
using the following pressure field relationship for a hydrostatic fluid:
~ − ρ~g = 0.
−∇p (1)

In many engineering applications, variation in pressure with height results in direct mea-
surement of altitude such as in aircrafts. The same principle can be used to measure heights
of buildings, towers and mountains/peaks. Use the methodology followed for equation (1)
and relate the variation of pressure in the measurements taken at two locations to calculate
the height of the peak. One measurement is carried out at the base of a peak and other at
the top as shown in figure (1).
Comment on the difference between the calculated heights if air is assumed incompressible.
Where required ρ = 1.2kg/m3 , Rair = 287J/(kgK) and one bar is 105 P a.

Problem 2: (10 marks) The dam in figure (2) is a quarter-circle 50m wide into the paper.
Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the hydrostatic force against the dam
and locations through which their lines of action pass. Also find the point CP where the
resultant strikes the dam.
Where required ρ = 1000kg/m3 .
