What
The 2021 Kroger School Food Rankings look at data on school breakfast and lunch participation rates and
afterschool meal programs offered in each district. Oftentimes, School Nutrition Departments do not get the
recognition they deserve. The 2021 Kroger School Food Rankings recognize the school districts doing an excellent
job at ensuring Texas’ students are getting nutritious meals throughout the day and provide an opportunity for
healthy competition in order to maintain and increase student access. The rankings also provide an opportunity to
highlight and learn from the top school districts and raise awareness about best practices that will help all Texas
school districts ensure the health and well-being of our students.

This year, CHILDREN AT RISK has enhanced the traditional Kroger School Food Rankings to encompass
innovation in the face of widespread community crisis. This release will recognize the School Nutrition
Departments who went above and beyond to address food insecurity needs in their community at the onset of the
pandemic, and those who found ways to make those efforts sustainable as it continues.

How Kroger will be recognized

CHILDREN AT RISK will market the report as “The Kroger School Food Rankings”, along with name/logo
recognition in all marketing and press materials for the rankings. Additionally, we would love to have Kroger
participation and representation at each press conference (bonus for local representation), and will include the
Kroger logo on the awards presented to the Top 10 school districts as well as the Kroger School Food Rankings
webpage, any social media promotion, and related documents for external distribution.

About Kroger School Food Rankings

C@R began compiling and releasing the School Food Rankings in 2016 with the intent to highlight the best school
nutrition programs in Texas. We wanted to generate positive attention for the top districts, while also starting a
conversation about why other districts were not in the top ten (or top 5 for large districts). We hoped that these
rankings could serve as an exclusive list that other districts want to be a part of, rather than a list where most of the
attention would be focused on districts at the very bottom. This opportunity for healthy competition has led to
conversations with school districts on why they were not on the list, and actions they could take to be on the list in
the future.

Ultimately, C@R’s would like to reduce the number of hungry children across Texas by encouraging school districts
to take advantage of food programs that are already available, supporting healthful choices, and recognizing the
innovation of School Nutrition Departments across Texas.
