Introduction
The present workforce demographics are dramatically shifting. The current corporate
America is more diverse in terms of age with an unparalleled four generations of workers
working together. This is because the Traditional generation or Veterans are delaying
retirement while others are coming back to work, the Baby Boomers are beginning to retire,
the Generation Xers have united their family /work priorities and generation Y is entering the
workforce with uniquely different requirements of their employees than those of the former
Additionally, each of this generation has its own goals, values and communication
approaches in the work place. Moreover, each of this generation has its own distinct set of
values, characteristics, preferences and beliefs. However, such a broad stand also provides a
broad base of ideas, attitudes and approaches which in turn create challenges to employers in
terms of maximizing on productivity, developing the business and protecting profits (Pitt-
Nonetheless, both employees and employers are faced with new opportunities and challenges
which are related to the modern multi-generational workforce. Therefore understanding these
differences and amalgamating them in the workplace is a challenge. This is because these
dynamics have an effect on staffing, efficiency and retention (Manion 2009, p. 8). As such,
most companies and firms are realizing that age does actually matter due to the increased
difference and friction in the workplace (Pitt-Catsouphes and Matz-Costa 2009, p. 4).
