"TRIZ" is the (Russian) acronym for the "Theory of Inventive Problem Solving." G.S.

Altshuller

and his colleagues in the former USSR developed the method between 1946 and 1985. “TRIZ is

a problem solving method based on logic and data, not intuition, which accelerates the project

team’s ability to solve these problems creatively. TRIZ also provides repeatability, predictability,

and reliability due to its structure and algorithmic approach…Somebody someplace has already

solved this problem (or one very similar to it). Creativity is now finding that solution and adapting

it to this particular problem.” (Altshuller, et. al, 1946)

In TRIZ Theory, the researchers first identify the problem and determine contradictions

from the matrix on the product. The contradictions are the following antecedents: shape

(12thimprovement feature) and object-affected harmful factors (30 thworsening feature). The

researchers search those features in the matrix and mention their corresponding numbers that

serve as indicators for contradictions (prior data needed). The numbers are then referred to the

40 Altshuller’s Principles of Invention and it will provide different solution for the initial problems

recognized. On the diagram above, the suggested solutions for the researchers’ problem are
four. The first suggested solution was Segmentation where different parts of a product can be

disassembled to increase effectiveness. The second is “Turn lemons into lemonade” where a

factor that produces harmful effects can be a subject of something beneficial. The third solution

is Parameter Changes where a part of a product can be totally changed to produce favorable

results. The last suggested solution is Taking Out, where a part of a product is entirely removed

or separated from the main product. Lastly, the suggested solutions will be applied, with respect

to Altshuller’s principles, but the researchers have the freedom to customize their own solution

to suit their own needs. For the product, two suggested solutions are taken into account and

applied with creativity. For Segmentation, roofs of the waiting shed can be modular and

automatic movement can be integrated to follow the sun’s movement. For “Turn lemons into

lemonade”, the solar heat can be used as an independent source for electricity of the waiting

shed.
