THE MAGICAL DRINK

A cup of coffee is not just a form of beverage that you drink when you get bored and you want to
refresh or you want to drink when you feel cold or hot. It’s a well balanced mixture of sweetness,
emotions and solution in our life. Some friend share a cup of coffee to stay overnight during their exams
in hostel. Some sweet relationship starts after few sip of coffee along with conversation after coffee that
breaks weirdness adding sweetness in their life. Some finds coffee to be the best method for saying
sorry. Some might start their day with coffee whereas some might end. The craze of coffee is the most
starting from children to old aged people. There is a special space for coffee in every one’s life.
Memories of every person is unique and having different attachment from other.

We love coffee and we drink it daily at least a cup without thinking twice. I know you are reading this
article because you first saw coffee and it drives you to the article. If I am not wrong then you are coffee
lover. Do we know where the coffee was first originated or tasted? I am pretty sure you might haven’t
probably heard its interesting story. The magical drink was originated from plant genus “Coffeea”. There
are two important coffee species in terms of commercial such as Arabica and Robusta. Arabica or the
first coffee species was discovered from Ethiopia. The goat herder Kaldi first discovered coffee when he
encountered his goats became so energetic after eating berries. So, he experimented by eating beans
with the same berries that his goat ate. He observed that beans kept him alert. First he shared his
finding or experience with monks at the monastery. Then, cultivation of coffee was increased and its
trade widely on the Arabian Peninsula. Then, slowly coffee reached to Europe. Then, slowly it became so
popular all over the world. Robusta is widely produced in central and western Africa, Indonesia,
Vietnam, Brazil etc.

Coffee is one of the gifts of nature. If nature is giving us then it will be advantageous definitely. The
consumption must be in right proportion for benefits otherwise it can create other issues in our health.
So, it seems to take any food in a balanced way to balance out physical, mental and social health. Coffee
possesses a lot of health benefits.

Coffee contains riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), magnesium, phenolic compounds etc.
Coffee boosts our energy level improving our performances. Coffee is beneficial in the liver disease as
well as in type 2 diabetes. As coffee is highly antioxidant, it reduces the risk of cancer. If black coffee is
taken without adding refined sugar, it contributes to a greater extent in weight loss. For some people,
coffee can make them go to washroom and helps with cleansing of stomach. Coffee also prevents gout,
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Coffee may protect against heart failure. It helps in treating
migraines.

There are some adverse effects or side effects which can be seen if excess amount of coffee is
consumed. Some of the bad effects are risk of bone fractures, preterm birth, endometriosis, gastro
esophageal reflux disease, anxiety, high blood pressure, muscle breakdown, rapid heart rate,
dehydration, irritability, insomnia etc.
Arabica coffee is being produced by Nepal. Nepalese coffee are considered to be very organic and eco
friendly in the international market. As coffee is gaining popularity in domestic market too, coffee has
become one of the major sources of income for Nepali. Coffee is cultivated in about 40 districts of mid-
hills. The districts that are popular for coffee production are Syangja, Kaski, Nuwakot, Argakhanchi,
Gulmi, Kavrepalanchowk etc. According to National Tea and Coffee development board, Nepal produce
an average of 470 metrics tons of coffee per year. On an average, 112 metric tons of coffee is exported
per year. Though we are producing coffee beans, it is still a part of adventure for many Nepalese since
the first coffee seeds was brought from Burma by a hermit Hira Giri in 1938 and planted in Gulmi district
which is also known as the hub of coffee production or popular in today’s Nepali coffee market. In
1975, Nepal became certified coffee producer. Being the Himalayan country, Nepal possesses very good
environment for Himalayan coffee which could be very demanding in near future if we started to
produce more and export to the international market.

 It takes 100 beans to make 1 cup of coffee.


 It takes 5 years for a coffee to mature enough to produce its first crop.
 Once roasted a coffee bean increases in volume but decreases in weight.
 Coffee is actually a fruit.

Coffee craze has been developed in a good amount in domestic market which increases good amount of
income for Coffee producer in Nepal. Nepalese coffee is making unique identity and slowly occupying
the international market. Many farmer and Nepalese government is showing interests in coffee
production as it is the easiest and possible scope in uplifting the economic standard of people and a
country as a whole. Coffee is not only supporting us economically but it is also useful in preventing soil
erosion in steepy land. It helps to add beauty to the nature. Coffee is not just a drink. It has hidden
magical power and who can afford not to drink at least once cup a day.
