Study Guide
DIRECTIONS: Have students fill out the
Study Guide for Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 as
they read. When they are done, go over the
study guide together.
1. What feelings did Jonas’s family share
during the evening ritual of sharing?
During the evening ritual of sharing
feelings, Lily felt angry at a visiting
Seven who hadn’t obeyed her Com-
munity’s rules. Father felt worried for
a newchild who would be Released if it
didn’t thrive soon. Mother felt frus-
trated, angry , and guilty because of
someone who had committed a second
transgression. She was afraid because
offenders were Released when a third
offense was committed. Jonas felt ap-
prehensive about the coming Ceremony
of Twelves.
2. What did Jonas’s parents discuss with
him about the Ceremony of Twelve?
How did he feel after the talk?
Jonas’s father told Jonas about his own
Ceremony of Twelve. He wasn’t sur-
prised to be given the Nurturer Assign-
ment because he had spent many hours
during his free time and all his volun-
teer hours at the Nurturing Center.
Jonas’s parents reassured him that the
Committee of Elders had been watching
him and that they would pick the right
assignment for him. His mother men-

tioned that his friendships would start
changing, based on his Assignment, and
that the celebrations around his age
would end. Jonas felt better after their
talk, but he still wondered what Assign-
ment he would get.
3. What was similar about Jonas and
Gabriel? Why did the similarity make
Jonas pretend to not care about the
newchild?
Jonas and Gabriel had pale eyes, where-
as most others in the Community had
dark eyes. Since Jonas didn’t often look
in mirrors, he didn’t realize how differ-
ent his eyes were until he saw Gabriel’s
eyes. In his Community, people were
supposed to be the same. Having pale
eyes made Jonas and Gabriel different
from others. Because of that, Jonas
pretended not to care about Gabriel.
4. What did Larissa tell Jonas about
Roberto’s Release? What did Jonas still
want to know?
In the House of the Old, Jonas bathed
Larissa, and they talked about Rober-
to’s Release. Larissa told him about the
celebration in the Releasing Room, but
after Roberto said goodbye to every-
one and left through the Release door,
Larissa didn’t know what happened.
Jonas wanted to know what actually
happened for Roberto to be Released.
5. Summarize what happened in Chapters
DIRECTIONS: Use the following questions

broken down by chapters. Students do
not need to break down their summa-
ries by chapters.)
Chapter 1: Jonas is apprehensive about
the coming Ceremony of Twelves. Jonas
tells his family in the daily ritual where
they share their feelings. He has no
idea what the Elders will choose as his
Assignment.
Chapter 2: Jonas’s parents ease his ap-
prehension through telling their stories
and reassuring him that the Committee
of Elders have been watching him.
Chapter 3: Father brings Gabriel home
so the family can give the newchild nur-
turing during the night. The Speaker
chastises Jonas for bringing home an
apple. Jonas apologizes and is bewil-
dered at how the apple changed for a
moment.
Chapter 4: Jonas volunteers at the
House of the Old with Asher and Fiona,
his friends. As he bathes Larissa, they
talk about a man named Roberto who
was Released in a beautiful ceremony.
No one really knows what Release is
because the ceremony ends when the
Old being celebrated walks through the
designated door in the Releasing Room.

Discussion Questions

What is the strongest emotion that you’ve
felt this week? Describe that emotion
using an experience from your life, such
as Jonas did when he told the story of
the lone one-person jet that flew over his
Community to describe his apprehension.
Inference / Prediction:
If the flight wasn’t an accident, where
might the plane have been going? How
was that feeling different from his appre-
hension over the Ceremony of Twelves?
Synthesis:
What did Jonas feel when he saw the lone,
one-person jet fly over his Community?
Do you believe the explanation for the jet’s
navigational error? Explain.
2. Career Assignment
Personal Connection:
How might the things you do in your free
time help you decide what you want to
be when you grow up? How might your
interests help you decide? How might the
subjects at school that you like help you?
Inference/Prediction:
If you were in Jonas’s group, what might
the Elders observe about you? With their
observations, what might they select as
an Assignment for you? Why might his
friendships change once each person is
given a separate Assignment?

look forward to being released from these

Why don’t more people in Jonas’s Com-
munity know about the Release?
Synthesis:
How does a celebration of Release honor
the Old? What does Jonas know about the
process of someone being Released?

DIRECTIONS: Choose one worksheet or
activity to help students better understand
these chapters.

1) A Classy Apology
Help your class better understand Jo-
nas’s culture through apologizing. Cut
out the rude behaviors found on the Situ-
ations Needing Apologies sheet. Place
them in a bowl. Ask a volunteer to choose
one. The volunteer should read their slip
of paper aloud, and then the volunteer
could apologize for it, following the out-
line for an apologize. Have the class as
a whole accept the apology. Repeat this
sequence with other volunteers. Once
everyone who wants a turn has had one,
talk about how it felt to apologize and re-
spond to each other in this way. Discuss
how the elements of an apology might
work in the students’ lives today.
2) Elder Observations
Pass out one Occupation List to each
child. Also pass out your class list. Ask
students to pretend they are the Elders
of Jonas’s Community. From what they
already know about others in their class-
room, ask them to write an occupation
next to each student’s name on the class
list. These occupations could be from the
list or from an occupation found in to-
day’s society. Gather these papers so you
can tabulate them for an exercise later in
the book. Talk about what observations
they made that allowed them to decide
on an occupation for a person.
3) Dictionary Page
Pass out the Dictionary Page. Ask
students to look up each word in the dic-
tionary and write a synonym, antonym,
its part of speech and what it means.
Then students should write the word in a
sentence.
4) Comfort Objects
Lily had a stuffed elephant, and Jonas had
a stuffed bear. Make a list of comfort ob-
jects that children today have. Why might
Jonas’s Community have removed comfort
objects at age eight? What does the re-
moval of comfort objects force children to
do? Is our society better or worse for not
forcing children to let go of comfort objects
and find a way to comfort themselves?
5) Observation Worksheet
Break students into small groups, and have
each group toss a ball back-and-forth to
each other. Ask them to observe the ball
in flight. Then have students sit down.
Pass out the Observation Worksheet. Have
students make notes about the ball’s size,
shape, color, speed, and arc, along with
other observations. Let them toss the balls
again to finish their observations. Then
have students write a descriptive para-
graph about the ball being tossed.
6) Celebration of Life
Make a card for an elderly person you
know. Honor that person by thanking him
or her for what he or she has meant to you
and how he or she has influenced you.
7) Match Game No. 1
Print the Match Game for this reading
section. Let students place cards face down
on their desks. Then students should turn
over two cards and try to match a question
to the correct answer. If the two cards are
not a question-answer match, students
should turn them face down, again. The
game continues in this way until students
have matched all the questions to the cor-
rect answers.
8) Flash Card Set No. 1
Print the flash cards for this reading sec-
tion. Cut them out. Fold them on the cen-
ter fold line, indicated by the word “fold,”
so the questions and answers face outward
in opposite directions. Tape the open side
of each card closed. For best results, use
cardstock and laminate. They can be used
for many classroom games.
9) Reading Comprehension Quiz
Give students the quiz over Chapters 1, 2,
3, 4. The answers for the quiz are as fol-
lows: 1. a; 2. c; 3. b; 4. c; 5. d; 6. a. Find
the summary for Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 on the
previous page under “5. Summarize what
happened in Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4,“ the
final answer in the Study Guide questions.
