Young people who commit serious crime such as robbery or violent attacks should be

punished in the same way as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In this day and age, punishments toward juvenile delinquents have come under
increased public scrutiny. While some people are of the opinion that lawbreakers should
receive similar sentences regardless of their ages, I would argue that there are myriad
reasons explaining why the degree of punishments for immature offenders should be less
strict.
On the one hand, supporters advocating for severe punishments understand that
juvenile delinquency these days is at an alarming rate. Thus, a strict sentence could act as a
deterrent for other potential criminals. In fact, the fear of life-long sentence or death
penalty perhaps avoid others from mimicking similar heinous crimes.Besides that, this can
also ensure the sense of safety and security among normal citizens. It is unequivocal that
some brutal transgressions such as robbery or physical harassment may signify inherently
violent personalities of young criminals. Therefore, lenient penalties such as probation
would probably be futile since there is a likelihood that those people will re-offend in the
future. As a consequence, this happening may put innocent people in jeopardy as well as
pose significant threat to the society on the whole.
On the other hand, there are a plethora of factors proving that harsh punishments are
not the only method to inhibit impulsive teen wrongdoers . Firstly, it has been scientifically
established that the mental capacities of teenagers are not yet developed. As a result, they
are not fully aware of all potential consequences resulting from their illegitimate behaviour.
To address this, rehabilitation programme that assists the progress of re-education is a wiser
and more pragmatic replacement to severe sentence which instil adolescents the
importance of a lawful society as well as allow them to get back to life as law-abiding
citizens. Secondly, it is undeniable that a deprived background seemingly force children to
resort to crime. In fact, Many children are now involving in illegal activities such as
shoplifting, pick pocketing, robbery and theft as a way of making living. Therefore, the higher
authority should allocate more funds to subsidize underprivileged families as well as provide
young convicts vocational courses instead of imposing heavier punishments. There is no
doubt that the intrinsic value of law is to ensure justice and order not to impose vengeful
punishments on any group of people.
To recapitulate, harsh penalties should be introduced in the perpetration of a felony in any
age group, however I believe that several lenient methods could also help to deter the youth
from engaging in illicit activities.
