I've never really had that much of a soft (0)................... for animals so I was initially quite (1)...................

by the prospect of visiting and having a look (2)................... the most famous animal shelter in the
(3)................... of the UK. People's pets generally leave me feeling a little ill (4)................... at the best of
times although I can feel some pangs of sympathy for the world-weary hounds I regularly see tied up
outside shopping centres while their owners are off (5)................... around inside. But now I think I can
safely say that even the most callous uncaring meat-eater would have been (6)................... to tears by
what I saw at the Nailsea Dogs' Home last week.

I suppose what I found most (7)................... was the way the dogs all responded so (8)................... to my
presence. As we passed row after row of narrow wire cages, the (9)................... half-awake occupants
suddenly sprang into a state of anxious excitement, each one frantically barking and begging me with its
big, dark, doleful eyes to give it a home. A few of these sad inmates were young and healthy but most had
(10)................... better days.

Jane Asher, the volunteer who was conducting my tour explained some of their stories and as she did so,
became understandably, quite (11)................... . Most, it seemed, were bought as presents for children.
Then sooner or later, either children or parents became (12)................... of the constant attention
demanded by their new pets and before long, they were out on the streets fending for themselves.
