Instead of rushing to report the problem to the instructor, the group leader can urge the members

to first engage in problem-solving. When a group takes a deliberate or systematic approach to

solve the problem at hand, it would help the group perform and function better. A deliberate

approach to problem solving benefits the group especially if the members do not have a history

of working together and only meet occasionally. Although each member of the group must be

committed to the process, leaders who facilitate the problem-solving process must practice

caution and avoid dogmatically taking steps that are irrelevant to the unique problem situation.

Here, Enrique is held up beyond control. It would only be fair if the group and its leadership

deliberately find a way of working with him such that he can fully be part of it. In other words,

the team should deliberate on the problem and come to a common agreement that would not

oppress Enrique due to the issues that have befallen him. A deliberate and systematic approach to

the problem would help members define the problem, analyze it, generate possible solutions,

evaluate the solutions and implement the best solution in a manner that satisfies all members.
