INES

• INES was introduced in March 1990 jointly by the International


Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency of
the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD/NEA).
• The International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) User’s Manual,
2001 Edition, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 2001
• The International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) is a means for
promptly communicating to the public in consistent terms the
safety significance of any reported event associated with
radioactive material and/or radiation and to any event occurring
during the transport of radioactive material.
• The last revision was published in 2001 and included a number
of amendments arising from
• experience of use since its first publication in 1992.
• Rating of Transport and Radiation Source Events. Additional
Guidance for the INES National Officers, Vienna, Austria, April
2006
• This document provides additional guidance on the rating of
transport and radiation source events. It will be incorporated into
the INES User Manual at its next revision.
