DIRECTING CONTROLLING
LET’S DISCUSS THSES FUNCTIONS OF
MANAGEMENT WITH EXAMPLES

1. PLANNING: - It is the first function of management it helps to bridge

gap between where we are and where we want to reach.

Actual result ___________GAP______________ desired results

The gap in above representation can be overcome by planning. In other

word planning means thinking before doing and how to do and who is
going to do.
ILLUSTRATION
# A car manufacturer want to double up his sales to 10000 per year
which is 5000 presently here is a gap of 5000 b/w actual and desired
result. This gap needs to be overcome by planning in the following way
* find out government policies.
* try out methods like inc. advt. or reducing price
*evaluating these alternatives.
*let us consider they select the option of advertising
*they will now implement this decision
* now they will make sure whether the objective is met or not.
2. Organising: - it means assigning duties, grouping tasks, establishing
authority, and allocating resources required to carry out a specific plan.
ILLUSTRATION
# let us consider a banking system
*first the work is divided in different individuals
*there are different departments for different activities e.g.
different department for operating lockers and different for
taking loans
* After that duties are assigned to different persons eg different
manger for every department.
*after that relations are established between each department
to avoid confusions.
3. Staffing: - it means filling the spaces in organization by
recruiting employees. It lays emphasizes on right person at right
place.
ILLUSTRATION
# an organization needs an accountant
*firm will provide an advertisement in the newspaper
*the competent persons will apply for the same
*the application letters will be sorted out
*their will be a call for interview
*after different tests and interaction the firm will decide the
most competent guy
* and that person will be given the position of accountant in the
firm.
Nowadays firms have a separate department called
HRM for staffing function.
4. Directing: - it is the process of directing, motivating, leading,
supervising and communicating with the subordinates to
achieve the organizational objectives.
ILLUSTRATION
# a firm performs directing in the following way.
*the supervisors keeps an eye on the subordinates on work to
make the goals achieve but supervising is classified as a hygiene
factor by HERZBERG.
*the leaders or the superiors at the work motivates the
subordinates to work more effectively and as per HERZBERG
this increases the morale
*the leaders in the organization inspires the employees to work
hard and efficiently and effectively
*communication is the most important part of the directing
process effective communication is marked by the presence of
follow up action.
5.Controlling:- it is the process of comparing actual result with
the desired results and analyzing deviations.
ILLUSTRATION
#production in company is
* a firm sets up a target to produce 12000 units of a product
*but the firm was able to produce 10000 only
*their was a deviation of 2000 units
* management found out that the deviations was because of
the laziness of the works.
Hence, corrective action was taken and the target was met.
As we know that cycle of management never comes to end it
will again start from planning.
