Brief General introduction on Management of neurological dysfunction

Management of neurologic dysfunction encompass care of patients with an altered level of


consciousness, increased intracranial pressure (ICP), patients undergoing neurological procedures
,experiencing seizures or experiencing headache. Disorders such as headache and seizures may be
symptoms of dysfunction in another body system. Alternatively headache and seizures can be symptoms
of severe disruption of the neurologic systems. This disorders may be diagnosed at times as idiopathic .

The neurological system relies on structural integrity for support and haemostatis,but this integrity may
be disrupted. eg of structural disruption include head injury, brain tumor, intra cranial haemorrhage,
infection and stroke .

In order to manage a patient with neurological dysfunction, a nurse requires an understanding of


neuroanatomy, ,neurophysiology ,neurodiagnostic settings,critical care nursing and rehabilitation
nursing.Nurses conduct ongoing assessment of patients neurological funtions and health needs
,identification of problems, development and implementation of Nursing care plans(including searching,
counseling and coordinating activities), and evaluation of the outcome of care are nursing actions
integral to the recovery of the patient.

The nurse also collaborates with other members of the health care team to provide essential Care ,offer
a variety of solutions to the problems, help the patient and the family gain control of their lives .The
goal is to achieve a high level of function as possible and to enhance the quality of life for the patient
with neurologic impairment and his or her family
