ACTIVITY 1: Environmental Science: An Interdisciplinary Discipline

Create a concept map showing the interrelationships of the different fields of study with Environmental
Science. Read a published study or article showing the interrelatedness of Environmental Science to your
course. Insert a figure, table, graph from one online study/ article. Explain the relationship of
Environmental Science with your course using the inserted image, table or graph.

Deforestation: facts, figures, and pictures by Rhett A. Butler, July 23, 2020
Forests are cut down to clear land for agriculture, livestock grazing, and settlement; for timber; to produce charcoal; and to establish tree plantations. While deforestation produces food, fiber, and fuel, it can also pose
risks to climate, biodiversity, and food security by degrading the ecosystem services normally afforded by healthy and productive forests. In tropical Latin America and Southeast Asia, most deforestation is directly caused
by conversion of natural forests for industrial activities, notably cattle ranching in the Amazon and large-scale tree plantations in Southeast Asia. These industrial activities typically produce commodities for export and
urban markets.

Engineers are known to be the builders of innovative developments for the sustainability of the economic growth. However, as the amount of needs are expected to be met, the environment suffers. Trees are being
outnumbered being converted to lumbers and many other uses for infrastructure. With this, deforestation is highly inevitable and it causes global warming, ozone layer depletion, and environmental crisis in which in the
later years, the people are most likely to endure the aftermath.

As the challenge of innovation increases rapidly, Civil Engineers who are the builders, and in which field I belong to, must take action into sustaining the development but with proper measures for the environment.
