Assignment:

Describe your country’s sewer system(s)

Write a report on your survey regarding the policy and management of the sewer system of
your country. ( minimum 1 A4, maximum 2 A4)
You decide which entity you want to examine ( municipality / town, province or the whole
country).
Below you will find the possible table of content(s).Chapters marked (*) are compulsory in
your report. Furthermore maximum three of the other subjects have to be investigated and
discussed in your report. Each subject has a number of questions which can help you in your
investigation.
You are allowed to investigate and report other subjects that interest you.

Introduction (*)

This chapter describes the different parts you are going to write about in your report. Look up
the facts on the percentage of people connected to the sewage main of your chosen entity as
well as the percentage of people connected to the sewage treatment.

History

When and where were the first drains and sewers installed? What happened before that time? /
Describe the situation before the drain and sewers were installed.

Legislation

What legislation is valid? Who decides what happens? Who pays for the sewer system? Who
is responsible for the sewer system and the drainage of water/ sewage disposal? How are taxes
levied? How high are these taxes?

Applied systems

Describe the applied systems. Why are these choices being made ( climate, …).? Describe
possible problems concerning the drainage of rain water.

Material/ execution

Name the most used material(s) levying a sewerage system. How is this levying being
executed? ( underneath a road, beside a road,….). What steps have to be taken during this
task? Is traffic rerouting being executed? How does the client control the execution of the
assignment?
Hydraulic dimensioning

Who decides the seize of the sewer system? ( client, consultancy,….)What are the most
important parameters calculating the sewer systems and sewage disposal/ water drainage.

Management and maintenance

Who manages the sewer system? How much does this cost? How is the system being
managed? What is the condition of the sewer system?

Conclusion. Comparison to the Netherlands (*)

Draw your conclusion of the examined subjects and compare them to the Dutch system.
