Conclusion
• It is usually the first sentence of a paragraph.
• It gives the main idea or the topic of the
paragraph.
• A good topic sentence helps readers
understand the paragraph.
• A TOPIC: what the paragraph is
about.
• A CONTROLLING IDEA: what the
writer is going to focus on in the
paragraph.
Either the topic or the controlling idea can
come first in the topic sentence.
Take a look at these two topic sentences.

I liked my childhood for many reasons.

There were many reasons why I

• Sentences with information that
supports the topic sentence.
• They must be connected to the topic
sentences.
• They can give examples, reasons or
facts to explain the topic sentence.
We use transition words (and, but, because, also, etc.) to connect
these sentences.

ALSO
Use “also” to connect ideas in positive sentences.

Part I: My childhood.
Write a text about your childhood memories.

Record yourself in a video explaining the information above and post your video in
Youtube.
Paste the link in the forum and comment your partners' videos.

session.

First intervention: Post two follow-up questions on one of your classmate’s anecdote.
