CDP Virtual Appliance Getting Started Guide

Introduction
The FalconStor Continuous Data Protector (CDP) Virtual Appliance for VMware
vSphere 4 and 5 is a pre-built, pre-configured, and ready-to-run software application
packaged with an operating system in a virtual machine. Offering advanced disk-
based data protection technology, CDPVA protects physical and virtual servers
simultaneously for continuous data availability, eliminating data loss from corruption
or failure.
The CDP Virtual Appliance for VMware vSphere integrates with the VMware
vSphere host, enabling fast recovery with 100% data integrity. FalconStor
DiskSafe™ and database agents run on a Windows server to capture changed data
blocks made to a system or disk without impacting application performance. It
mirrors data in real-time to the backend CDP server via iSCSI and takes point-in-
time snapshots that enable users to roll back to a desired point and quickly recover
data. The back-end CDP server retains up to 255 snapshots, which can be mounted
directly for backup, verification, testing, and recovery in moments regardless of
database size.

Components
CDPVA consists of the following components:

Component Description

Introduction

Benefits
The CDP Virtual Appliance offers a unified solution for both local backup/recovery
and remote DR. Its ease of use and flexible architecture enables data recovery from
a local or remote CDP server.

24 x 7 server protection
Traditional backup systems are often limited because of the time frame of the
backup window. With most systems, backup can only be performed once a day and
if a problem occurs, it can be difficult to resolve. For example, if a backup fails, it is
not easy to recover from the problem and start another backup during the same
backup window.
FalconStor's CDPVA works in conjunction with FalconStor DiskSafe, host-based
data protection software. DiskSafe protects disks by capturing block-level changes
made to system and data disks and replicating the data to a FalconStor CDP virtual
appliance without impacting the performance of the applications running on the
protected machines.
It is also possible for multiple CDPVAs to replicate their journal and snapshots to
each other across a global network. Therefore, it is possible to deploy the
FalconStor CDP Virtual Appliance as a very effective global disaster recovery
solution, which is ideal for remote offices, allowing organizations to consolidate all
disk images from smaller sites to a central management site.

Database and application protection

DiskSafe integrates with host-side snapshot agents to provide consistent recovery
points. These point-in-time snapshots facilitate rapid recovery when the host
experiences a hard (disk crash) or soft (human error, application crash, virus, or data
corruption) failure. If a snapshot agent was not used, it would be much harder to
recover data. For example, a database might need to be repaired before recovery,
extending recovery time.
With FalconStor's CDPVA, when creating a snapshot, DiskSafe triggers the
snapshot agent to communicate with the database or an application, putting it briefly
into backup mode, ensuring that the database can be directly mounted from any
snapshot recovery point.
For added protection, FalconStor's CDPVA supports a group-level snapshot of all
related databases and transaction logs, even if they are on different volumes or
disks. A snapshot of all group members is created at the same time, providing point-
in-time recovery points that are consistent and have 100% data integrity.
Refer to the DiskSafe User Guide and the Snapshot Agents User Guide (available
from ftp.falconstor.com) for additional information.

Introduction

Rapid recovery from software and hardware failure

The FalconStor CDPVA allows you to recover from any hardware or software failure
– such as a lost file, system, or crashed server – in minutes. Database and
messaging agents ensure data integrity during the snapshot process.
The FalconStor CDPVA protects applications running on virtual and physical
machines, including system and data disks, allowing the administrator to recover
from software or hardware failure.
If one or more files are lost, the administrator can easily copy the lost files from the
snapshot disk. If the protected server is a Microsoft Exchange server, the
administrator can quickly recover mailbox data from the recovery storage group that
is directly mounted to the Exchange mailbox database.
Before FalconStor's CDPVA, the administrator would not be able to do anything if
disk array hardware was broken, causing Exchange services to stop. The
administrator would have to wait for the hardware to be repaired.
With FalconStor's CDPVA, the administrator can mount the snapshot disk and
provide it to the server via an iSCSI connection. The administrator can then start up
the system by booting from the iSCSI HBA in about five minutes. This provides the
service with the original settings on the same server. If the iSCSI HBA was not
installed on the server, the administrator can also start the service from the DiskSafe
snapshot disk on a VMware vSphere host.
CDPVA is available in the following versions:

Account Management
There are three types of accounts for the virtual appliance, each with different
permission levels. The three accounts have the same default password.
● fsadmin - can perform any VA operation other than managing accounts. They
are also authorized for VA client authentication. The default password is
IPStor101 and is case-sensitive.
● fsuser - can manage virtual devices assigned to them and can allocate space
from the storage pool(s) assigned to them. In addition, they can create new
SAN/NAS resources, clients, and groups as well as assign resources to clients,
and join resources to groups, as long as they are authorized. VA Users are also
authorized for VA client authentication. Any time an VA User creates a new SAN/
NAS resource, client, or group, access rights will automatically be granted for the
user to that object. The default password is IPStor101 and is case-sensitive.
● root user - has full privileges for all the system operations. Only root can manage
the user account and system configuration (maintenance).

Basic system environment configuration

Before starting CDPVA, it is recommended that you first add a virtual disk to CDPVA
for data storage. Refer to the Configuration and Management chapter of the CDP
Virtual Appliance User Guide for detailed instructions. Then return to this section to
