networks and 'LNG at the Doorstep' service on a continuous basis.
LNG at Doorstep

 The "LNG at Doorstep" initiative involves making LNG available to the customers not
connected by gas pipeline. Gas is transported through a cryogenic system, stored in a
cryogenic holding tank at the target location and re-gassified on-site through vaporizers for
use as fuel. The entire operation, being concealed, eliminates the possibility of adulteration and
pilferage. Introduced in 2007, this initiative has been well received and is attracting more
customers located away from the pipelines.

Products

1) AutoGas

 AutoGas (LPG) is a clean, high octane, abundant and eco-friendly

fuel. It is obtained from natural gas through fractionation and from
crude oil through refining. It is a mixture of petroleum gases like
propane and butane.
 The higher energy content in this fuel results in a 10% reduction of CO2 emission as compared
to MS(Motor Spirit).
 AutoGas is a gas at atmospheric pressure and normal temperatures, but it can be liquefied (250
times less volume than gas)
 Indian Oil has setup 352 Auto LPG Dispensing Stations(as on 01.11.19) covering 204 cities
across India.
 AutoGas impacts greenhouse emissions less than any other fossil fuel when measured through
the total fuel cycle.
 Motor Octane Number (MON) is equal to 88.

2) Petrol / Gasoline

 Automotive gasoline and gasoline-oxygenate blends are used in internal combustion spark-
ignition engines. These spark ignition engine fuels are primarily used for passenger cars.
 Gasoline is a complex mixture of relatively volatile hydrocarbons that vary widely in chemical &
physical properties and are derived from fractional distillation of crude petroleum with a
further treatment mainly in terms of improvement of its octane rating. The hundreds of
individual hydrocarbons in gasoline range from c4 to c11
 An oxygenate is an oxygen-containing, ashless organic compound (such as an alcohol or
ether) which can be used as a fuel or fuel supplement. Motor gasoline is sold at retail outlets
where it is directly delivered into the automobile tank. The Indian Standard governing the
properties of motor gasoline & gasoline-oxygenate blends is IS 2796 : 2000 (3rd Rev).

XTRAPREMIUM petrol is a much sought-after fuel among discerning motorists who are in many
ways emotionally attached to their wheels.

 The 'Clean and Keep Clean' function of the super cleanser additive in XTRAPREMIUM reduces
deposits at the port fuel injector, intake valve and controls combustion chamber deposits to
maintain "like new" performance of the vehicle. Regular use of XTRAPREMIUM gives the vehicle
a superior pick-up, smoother drive, better mileage, and lower emission. XTRAPREMIUM is
designed not only to optimise performance of new generation vehicles but also rejuvenate old
vehicles to perform better.
 Little wonder, IndianOil's XTRAPREMIUM petrol is the largest selling branded petrol in India
3) Diesel/Gasoil

 Petroleum derived diesel (called as Petro diesel) is a mixture of straight run product (150 'C and
350 'C) with varying amount of selected cracked distillates and is composed of saturated
hydrocarbons (primarily paraffins including n , iso , and cycloparaffins), and aromatic
hydrocarbons (including napthalenes and alkylbenzenes).
 Diesel is used in diesel engines, a type of internal combustion engine. Rudolf Diesel originally
designed the diesel engine to use coal dust as a fuel, but oil proved more effective. Diesel
engines are used in cars, motorcycles, boats, and locomotives. Automotive diesel fuel serves to
power trains, buses, trucks, and automobiles, to run construction, petroleum drilling and other
off-road equipment and to be the prime mover in a wide range of power generation &
pumping applications.
 The diesel engine is high compression, self-ignition engine. Fuel is ignited by the heat of high
compression and no spark plug is used.
 The Indian Standard governing the properties of diesel fuels is IS 1460:2005 (5th Rev).
Important characteristics are ignition characteristics, handling at low temperature, flash point.
 Diesel fuel often contains higher quantities of Sulphur. In India, emission standards (BS VI) have
necessitated oil refineries to dramatically reduce the level of sulfur in diesel in view of the auto
fuel policy brought in force by Govt of India.
 BIS has brought out specification for "Diesel with 5% Biodiesel" that may be marketed in near
future.

IndianOil's XTRAMILE Super Diesel, the leader in the branded diesel segment, is blended with world-
class multi-functional fuel additives. Commercial vehicle owners choose XTRAMILE because they see a
clear value benefit in terms of superior mileage, lower maintenance costs and improved engine
protection.

3) Indane Cooking Gas

 Indane is today one of the largest packed-LPG brands in

the world and has been conferred the coveted Consumer
Super brand status by the Super brands Council of India
 Having launched LPG marketing in the mid-60s,
IndianOil has been credited with bringing about a kitchen revolution, spreading warmth and
cheer in millions of households with the introduction of the clean and efficient cooking fuel
 It has led to a substantial improvement in the health of women, especially in rural areas by
replacing smoky chulha. Indane is today an ideal fuel for modern kitchens, synonymous with
safety, reliability, and convenience.
 With the status of an exclusive business vertical within the Corporation, Indane is delivered to
the doorsteps of 13.11 crore households.
 IndianOil's 94 Indane bottling plants in upcountry locations roll
out over 2 million cylinders a day, making IndianOil the second
largest marketer of LPG globally, after SHV Gas of The
Netherlands. Indane is available in compact 5 kg cylinders for
rural, hilly, and inaccessible areas, 14.2 kg cylinders for
domestic use, and 19 kg and 47.5 kg for commercial and
industrial use.
 LPG is a blend of Butane and Propane readily liquefied under moderate pressure.
 LPG vapour is heavier than air; thus, it normally settles down in low-lying places. Since LPG has
only a faint scent, a mercaptan odorant is added to help in its detection. In the event of an
LPG leak, the vapourisation of liquid cools the atmosphere and condenses the water vapour
contained in it to form a whitish fog, which is easy to observe. LPG in large concentrations
displaces oxygen leading to a nauseous or suffocating feeling.
 Suraksha LPG hose flame retardant aprons and energy efficient Green Label stoves are
recommended to enhance safety measures while using LPG as cooking fuel.
 Leh LPG, At the world's highest altitude, Indane LPG bottling plant situated at 11,800 ft. in Phey
Village of Ladakh district, is operated by a team of 11 women, carrying out both technical and
non-technical activities

4) Kerosene

 Kerosenes are distillate fractions of crude oil in the boiling range of 150-250 °C. They are
treated mainly for reducing aromatic content to increase their smoke point (height of a
smokeless flame) and hydrofining to reduce sulphur content and to improve odour, colour &
burning qualities (char value).
 Kerosene is used as a domestic fuel for heating / lighting and for manufacture of
insecticides/herbicides/fungicides to control pest, weeds, and fungi. Since kerosene is less
volatile than gasoline, increase in its evaporation rate in domestic burners is achieved by
increasing surface area of the oil to be burned and by increasing its temperature. The two
types of burners which achieve this fall into two categories namely vaporisers & atomisers

5) Aviation Fuel (Our groundwork takes you sky high)

 IndianOil Aviation Service is a leading aviation fuel solution provider in India and the most-
preferred supplier of jet fuel to major international and domestic airlines. Between one sunrise
and the next, IndianOil Aviation Service refuels over 2,200 flights from the bustling metros to

 Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is dispensed from specially designed refuellers, which are driven
up to parked airplanes and helicopters. Major airports have hydrant refuelling systems that
pump the fuel right up to the filling outlets on the tarmac through underground pipelines for
faster refuelling. Essentially, ATF is pumped into an aircraft by two methods: Overwing and
Underwing. Overwing fueling is used on smaller planes, helicopters, and piston-engine aircraft
and is like automobile fuelling - one or more fuel ports are opened, and fuel is pumped in with
a conventional pump. Underwing fuelling, also called single point is used on larger aircraft.
 Ensuring that these standards are always upheld, there is a backup of a highly skilled, qualified,
and dedicated team of officers and refueling crew. IndianOil has a strategic partnership with Air
BP, the world leader in aviation business.
 Delhi Rs. 42,931.28/kl, Kolkata Rs. 47,360.79/kl

8) Indane NANOCUT

 Indane NANOCUT (an LPG variant enriched with proprietary additive formulation) is a safe and
efficient alternative to the hazardous oxy-acetylene gas used for metal-cutting and other high-
temperature applications.
 Conventionally metal cutting application involves usage of Oxy Acetylene mixture which has
higher degree of hazard potential due to high shock sensitivity and very large flammability
range. The method of using oxy-acetylene gas for metal cutting applications is fraught with
potential hazard of explosion during usage as well as storage and hence discouraged
worldwide despite of its high flame temperature and calorific value. The issue of high cost and
hazards associated with acetylene calls for an alternative which is safer, cheaper, and easily
available. This has prompted the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG) for metal
cutting applications. However, the lower flame temperature of LPG has been an adverse
aspect, which limits the use of LPG in high temperature applications such as metal cutting.
 Indian Oil has been working on the ways and means of enhancing the performance of LPG for
high flame temperature applications. Our new product "Indane NANOCUT" is additized LPG for
high temperature Industrial applications which is based on a proprietary additive formulation
innovated at Indian Oil R&D Centre Faridabad. The indigenously developed additive
 enhances the efficiency of LPG as cutting gas in terms of high flame temperature,
 heat through put,
 low oxygen consumption,
 reduced cylinder inventory,
 thereby leading to better economy to the user of "Indane NANOCUT".
 Indane NANOCUT, an innovative product developed by IndianOil R&D, has bagged yet
another prestigious innovation award today under the category of Breakthrough Product –
Innovation in R&D and AI in a nationwide Innovation Contest held by All India Management
Association (AIMA).

Green Fuel Alternatives

In recent times, there has been a marked shift from use of conventional fossil fuels to new and
renewable sources of energy that are cleaner, safer, and inexhaustible. Against the backdrop of a
widening gap between supply and demand, it becomes imperative to diversify energy sources and
explore alternative ways to meet the country's energy need and sustain economic growth. Growing
environmental concerns also pose a serious challenge for energy companies, underlying the urgency
to usher in cleaner and sustainable energy resources.

In the country's pursuit of alternative sources of energy, IndianOil is focusing on CNG (compressed
natural gas), Autogas (LPG), ethanol blended petrol, biodiesel, and Hydrogen energy.

CNG

 CNG is being marketed from select IndianOil outlets in Mumbai and Delhi as a franchisee of
Mahanagar Gas Ltd., Mumbai, and Indraprastha Gas. Ltd., Delhi, respectively. As on date, CNG is
available at 13 IndianOil outlets each in Mumbai and Delhi. As demand picks up, IndianOil will set
up additional outlets.

Compressed Biogas (CBG)

 Biogas is produced naturally (through a process of anaerobic decomposition) from waste / bio-
mass sources like agriculture residue, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, municipal solid waste,
sewage treatment plant waste, etc. After purification, it is compressed and called CBG, which has
high methane content. Further, Compressed Biogas is exactly like the commercially available
natural gas in its composition and energy potential. With similar calorific value and other
properties like CNG, Compressed Biogas can be used as an alternative, renewable automotive fuel.
Given the abundance of biomass in the country, Compressed Biogas has the potential to replace
CNG in automotive, industrial and commercial uses in the coming years. In a significant push that
has the potential to boost availability of more affordable transport fuels, better use of agricultural
residue, cattle dung and municipal solid waste as well as to provide an additional revenue source
to farmers, an innovative initiative titled SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable
Transportation) has been kicked-off by PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs, that is, IOC, BPC
and HPC) inviting Expression of Interest (EoI) from potential entrepreneurs to set up Compressed
Bio-Gas (CBG) production plants and make available CBG in the market for use in automotive
fuels. This developmental effort would benefit both vehicle-users as well as farmers and
entrepreneurs.

Autogas (LPG)

 AutoGas (LPG) is a clean, high octane, abundant and eco-friendly fuel. It is obtained from natural
gas through fractionation and from crude oil through refining. It is a mixture of petroleum gases
like propane and butane. The higher energy content in this fuel results in a 10% reduction of
CO2 emission as compared to MS. The use of LPG as an automotive fuel has become legal in
India with effect from April 24, 2000, albeit within the prescribed safety terms and conditions.
Hitherto, the thousands of LPG vehicles running in various cities have been doing so illegally by
using domestic LPG cylinders, a very unsafe practice. Using domestic LPG cylinders in automobiles
is still illegal. The fuel is marketed by IndianOil under the brand name 'AutoGas'. Indian Oil has
setup 352 Auto LPG Dispensing Stations(as on 01.11.19) covering 204 cities across India. AutoGas
impacts greenhouse emissions less than any other fossil fuel when measured through the total
fuel cycle. Conversion of petrol to AutoGas helps substantially reduce air pollution caused by
vehicular emissions the saving on account of conversion to AutoGas in comparison to petrol is
about 35-40%. Low filling times and the 35-40% saving is a reason enough for a consumer to
convert his vehicle to AutoGas.

Ethanol-blended petrol

 In the year 2003, a new eco-friendly fuel popularly called 'Gasohol' was launched. This fuel
combines petrol with 5% ethanol obtained from the sugarcane molasses available throughout the
country. IndianOil's R&D centre has established a feasibility of ethanol blending up to 10%,
which is now gaining acceptance of vehicle manufacturers. India has also signed a MOU with Brazil
in April 2002 for transfer of technology in blending ethanol with petrol and diesel at higher
properties.
 Doping of ethanol with petrol supplies extra oxygen for complete combustion, which reduces
carbon monoxide levels in auto emission and therefore, it is considered more environment friendly
as it lessens air pollution. For now, its biggest advantage is for the macro economy. When fully
implemented all over the country, the programme can provide tangible benefits to our economy
on the energy front.
 Based on successful completion of the pilot project initiated by the Ministry of Petroleum &
Natural Gas, Government of India and studies conducted by IndianOil R&D, supply of 5% ethanol-
blended petrol has been initiated in 10 States and three Union Territories in the first phase, and
will be further extended to all parts of the country subsequently.
Biodiesel

 Biodiesel is an alternative fuel, having diesel like properties, synthesized by a simple chemical
reaction of alcohols with vegetable oils. It is commonly made from edible oils like soyabean,
rapeseed and palm oil in the world. However, non-edible tree borne oil seeds of Jatropha and
Karanjia are material of choice for India. These trees are energy fixing, fast-growing and yield
appreciable quantity of seeds.
 IndianOil has entered an MOU with Indian Railways for plantation of Jatropha on railway land. It is
also setting up 10 biodiesel procurement centres. A reduction of 10 to 15% in smoke density has
been observed with the use of biodiesel blends.

Hydrogen Energy

 Hydrogen holds the potential to provide a clean and reliable source of energy that can be
used in a wide range of applications, including the transport sector. Besides ensuring energy
security to the nation, the environmental benefits of using Hydrogen in a fuel cell vehicle could be
significant.
 IndianOil R&D in collaboration with SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) and other
vehicle manufacturers, had undertaken extensive field validation exercises to arrive at the optimal
Hydrogen percentage to be spiked in CNG for deriving maximum benefits in fuel economy and
emissions reduction. Further, IndianOil is also extensively working with heavy duty automakers to
optimise the catalyst recipe of three-way catalytic converters fitted on buses and trucks to bring
down the NOx levels within the permissible range of the BS-VI emission limits when CNG is
replaced with H-CNG.
Heath, Safety & Environment (S, H&E): The three pillars to ensure safe communities and happy
stakeholders

IndianOil accords topmost priority to conducting its business with a strong environment conscience,
ensuring sustainable development, safe workplaces, and enrichment of the quality of life of its
employees, customers, and community at large.

Environment

All refineries are certified to ISO:14064 standards for sustainable development as well as for the
Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS/OHSAS018001), besides having fully
equipped occupational health centres.

During refinery operations, wastewater, flue gases and fugitive emissions and solid wastes are
generated. Refineries are also significant consumers of scarce resources like water and energy. Thus,
pollution control and resource conservation activities are a priority area for environment management
at IndianOil. Effective treatment of wastewater and recycling, energy conservation and pollution
abatement are examples of integrated activities that result in both pollution control and resource
conservation.

 Minimize adverse environmental impact from refinery activities.

 Conserve scarce natural resources their consumption is continually optimized

The different aspects of Environment Management in IndianOil are detailed below.

Waste-Water Management

Use of water and quality of effluent discharged are carefully monitored. Our refineries are equipped
with a network of underground sewers for segregated collection of various wastewater streams,
which are subjected to precise treatment in well-designed effluent treatment (ETP) facilities
involving physical, chemical, and biological processes.

State of art equipment have been provided in the ETPs like Tilted Plate Interceptor (TPI), Dissolved
Air Floatation (DAF), Bio-tower, activated sludge basins, dual media filters for treating oily wastewater
and hydrogen peroxide / wet air oxidation treatment for spent caustic streams etc. These treatment
facilities are backed by sophisticated instrumentation and real time monitoring systems for close and
precise monitoring.

Water Conservation

 Treated effluent streams are reused / recycled for various purposes in refineries like make-up
for fire water, cooling tower, coke cutting in Delayed Cokers, etc.
 Sour water generated in various units is stripped of contaminants such as ammonia and H2S and
recycled in de-salters besides using it for process flushing requirements.
 Advanced treatment systems like Ultra Filtration, Reverse Osmosis etc. are used to convert
treated effluent to de-mineralised water or for use in cooling towers as make-up water.
 Rainwater harvesting structures have been put up in all refinery townships, Marketing and
Pipeline installations and R&D Centre for recharging groundwater.

All these steps have led to 80-95% wastewater being reused in our refineries, which has resulted in
substantial reduction in fresh-water consumption.

Prevention of Air Pollution

 Tall stacks for effective dispersion of pollutants.

 Use of low sulphur fuel oil/ sweet natural gas/ desulphurized refinery gas in boilers and heaters
to minimize SO2 emission.
 Use of low NOx burners.
 Hydrogen Sulphide generated during desulphurisation of refinery gas is converted to elemental
sulphur in Sulphur Recovery Units.
 Use of Mechanical seals in pumps for minimizing fugitive emission of hydrocarbons.

For careful monitoring of emissions, continuous online analyzers have been installed in all the
refinery stacks. Online connectivity is also being provided to Central and State Pollution Control
Boards.

Mobile vans and fixed monitoring stations equipped with sophisticated instruments for monitoring
ambient air quality have also been provided in our refineries.

Solid Waste Management

Prevent, Reduce, Reuse and Recover are the fundamental principles that govern all our activities,
more so in case of solid waste management. Oily / chemical / biological sludge generated from
storage tanks during refinery turnarounds or from the basins & storage tanks of our effluent
treatment facilities are mechanically handled. Melting pits with skimming pumps, sophisticated
hydro cyclones, centrifuges etc. are employed for de-oiling the sludge.

After de-oiling, residual sludge is recycled in Coker units or bio-remediated in well-designed

environmentally safe sites. Bioremediation in confined bioreactor is the latest innovation in
bioremediation of residual oily sludge developed in-house by IndianOil R&D. Called Oilivorous-S.

Spent catalysts and other wastes are sent to approved recyclers for gainful use in their manufacturing
processes like FCCU catalyst in cement kilns. Vermicomposting is practiced in our refineries to
process domestic waste from the industrial canteens.

Oil Spill Response (OSR) Facilities

Accidental oil spills, whether on land or water (including both sea and fresh water) have the potential
to cause serious problems for coastal and marine wildlife, especially corals, fishes, birds, mammals,
and reptiles.

IndianOil has a well-structured system in place to plug / handle all possible sources of oil leaks
including oil tanker spills, non-tanker ship spills, pipelines from SBM to onshore tanks and tank farms
or may be cross country crude oil and product pipelines.
e-Waste Management

Noise Pollution Control

Major sources of noise pollution are engines, compressor house, turbine hall, furnace etc.

 Regular maintenance of machines

 Use of low noise machines
 Suitably designed enclosure for both source and receiver
 Use of sound absorbing material
 Personnel Protective Equipment (PPEs) like ear plugs, earmuffs, etc. are also used in identified
high noise areas.

Green Belts and Ecological Parks

Scientifically designed green belts have been developed, which serve as a pollution sinks and
enhance aesthetics. Over 18 lakh trees already adorn our green belts. More than 300 species of
resident and migratory birds thrive in these Eco Parks.

Further, as a green initiative, e-portals have been launched and payments, data transfer are done
using the electronic media. This results in considerable saving of paper, thereby preventing cutting of
trees.

Mangrove plantation has been carried out in 100 Ha of Marine national park and marine sanctuary
area near Narara bet (Vadinar). Villager awareness programmes are also conducted.

Energy Efficient Petroleum Refining

Profitability improvement and optimisation studies are regularly carried out by external agencies such
as KBC, Mckinsey, NTPC, etc. as well as by in-house Process Design and Engineering Cell (PDEC) of
IOC.

Auto Fuels Quality Improvement

Fuelling India's Green Energy Quest

IndianOil has ambitions plans to broaden its energy basket with alternative energy options; the
Corporation envisages setting up 260 MW of renewable energy (wind and solar) over the next
five years. Wind-power systems totaling 168 MW have been installed in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and
Rajasthan. The total installed capacity of solar PV is 20 MW, which includes 9.5 MW grid-connected
solar projects and 10.5 MW off-grid projects.

The Corporation has so far converted about 6,600 of its fuel stations to operate on solar energy as a
major initiative to reduce carbon emissions. Their cumulative capacity is about 26 MW. About 560
rainwater harvesting systems have been installed at various refineries, terminals, depots, and housing
complexes of IndianOil. With a total catchment area of 950 hectares, about 3 billion litres of water is
being harvested annually.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

Carbon foot printing of all our refineries has been done.

As a responsible corporate citizen, IndianOil is aware of its responsibility towards not only
mitigating environmental pollution due to its operations but also the role it can play in improving the
environment by making products which cause least pollution & towards this end, it has made massive
investments in setting up necessary infrastructure.
