“COME SEPTEMBER”

A note by Priyadarshini Kulkarni

Singer and composer Bobby Darin had composed an instant tune for an
audition, when he was asked to compose a tune inspired by autumn which
would be romantic as well as foot-tapping . The director of the film Robert
Mulligan became spellbound after listening to it and asked Darin to compose
the theme music of “Come September” in the year 1961 .
Darin recorded ‘Come September' with guitars, mandolins, piano accordions
and the bongo, giving stress to a loving lilt , a characteristic rise and fall of the
voice in accent. Unconsciously, he himself started tapping to his own creation
as he heard this recording.
Legendary Film director Sir David Lean officially confessed he could not have
dreamt of using a lilting tune like ‘Come September' as his method of working
lacked that inherent spontaneity. Elizabeth Taylor personally congratulated
Darin on his lively creation, stating that whenever she felt morose, she listened
to ‘Come September' to perk up her spirits. ‘Come September' broke all
previous musical records with its sheer lilt and melody.
This title music became very popular in India and Pakistan and quite a few film
songs are based on this tune. “Come September” still enthrals audiences
across the world.
Lets listen to a recording of this tune played by the orchestra by Billy Vaughn ,
who was one of the most popular orchestra leaders and pop music arrangers of
the '50s and early '60s.
